American Idol judge Katy Perry got shade during season 21, but Top 8 finalist Oliver Steele doesn't think she deserved it. Katy faced criticism for a joke that contestant Sara Beth Liebe perceived as mom-shaming during her audition. This happened even though she later tried to convince the singer to stay, rather than quit Hollywood Week to go home to her children. Katy was also booed for the first time in her tenure on the show, after telling finalist Nutsa to tone down her performances. Additionally, Katy was questioned when she focused on who was eliminated (rather than feedback for contestant Wé Ani) when the Top 20 finalists were revealed.

In an Instagram post, Oliver defended and praised Katy. The singer was saved by Katy during the Judges' Song Contest. Oliver wrote, "Katy is not a bully, nor does she shame people."

Oliver explained that he was, "nervous" throughout the competition, but, "Katy has an incredible ability to not just tell what emotional state you’re in, but to be able to tell what’s holding you back." Oliver said that he loves all the judges, including Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. However, he added, "but Katy always seemed to be able to look into my soul and tell exactly what was troubling me, or what it was I was struggling with."

American Idol's Oliver Steele Says Katy Perry Made Him A Better Musician & Artist

American Idol's Katy Perry on the judging panel

Oliver explained, "It’s one thing to teach someone to believe in their ability, which the judges are fabulous at. Katy reminded me to believe in who I am as an artist. She challenged me to push myself, to take on challenges that made me uncomfortable. I’m a better musician and artist after Katy Perry pushed me to believe in my potential, and to exceed my limitations." Oliver concluded his post by saying that he hopes Katy stays on American Idol. He said, "You’re a guiding light, an incredible teacher. And you made me believe that I am my own hero. Thank you for everything."

Oliver is right that Katy isn't a bully, and she didn't deserve the harsh backlash that she received during American Idol season 21. It was admirable for him to come to her defense. When Katy was gone for an episode because she performed at King Charles III's coronation, her absence was felt. She is a cheerleader for the contestants, and her expertise as a performer helps her to push them to new heights. Katy has always supported the finalists, celebrating their victories. and sympathizing with their difficulties. Oliver gave the perfect description of Katy, emphasizing that she is a pure soul who would never intentionally hurt a contestant.

During the American Idol season 21 finale, Katy once again showed her unwavering support for the contestants. She and finalist Haven Madison sang a powerful and emotional duet of Haven's original song "Still Need You" and Katy's own "By the Grace of God." Katy is known for her finale duets with the contestants, during which she allows them to shine in the spotlight. She enjoys watching them spread their wings and fly beyond the show.

American Idol is better for having Katy as a judge. She wears her heart on her sleeve. Hopefully, Katy will return for American Idol season 22, and continue to bring her magic to the show.
