Noah Thompson, the country singer who won American Idol season 20, shared a new original song titled, "On the Outside." Noah has an incredible country singing voice, but the 20-year-old construction worker from Louisa, Kentucky, often speaks about how he is not really a songwriter. Many of his fellow American Idol finalists such as Fritz Hager, Leah Marlene, and HunterGirl performed their original music on the show, but Noah decided to sing covers, which he did perfectly. From his first audition song of "Giving You Up" by Kameron Marlowe to his performance of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" on finale night, Noah showed growth as an artist. He impressed everyone, especially since he had no prior experience with performing.

When the time came for the American Idol Top 7 finalists to choose singles to record, Noah selected "One Day Tonight."  The song is about a man who hopes to make his girlfriend's dreams about their future come true, including a wedding, a house, children, and a dog. The song reached number one on the music charts. Although Leah Marlene and HunterGirl released their original songs, "Flowers" and "Red Bird," Noah did not choose to record one of his own songs. He felt that his strength was singing, and that he would leave the songwriting to others.

However now, in an Instagram post, Noah shared a clip of a much-anticipated new original song that he wrote titled, "On the Outside," and he asked his fans for their opinions about it, including whether or not he should finish writing it. The video, which he recorded on TikTok, features Noah playing an acoustic guitar. He begins by saying, "Alright, so here's something I've been working on. I don't consider myself a good songwriter, but I don't know. We'll see what y'all think." Noah then sang the song which features the lyrics, "It’s easy come and easy go / it’s pain you feel in your soul / it’s when you’re locked up in your mind / find ways to pass the time / only Heaven knows / where this thing goes / but you don’t make it so easy / and I can’t make you stay / and my heart’s only beating / your way / if I've had one too many / start to drink and drive / I hope you know I’m all good / I’m all good on the outside." He ended the clip by saying, "Y'all let me know what you think."

Noah's caption for the Instagram post read, "Tell me what y'all think, should I finish it?? #songwriting #nashvilletn #ontheoutside." The comments section of the post was filled with words of praise, encouraging Noah to complete the song. Noah's fans and fellow American Idol contestants expressed how much they loved the song. Dan Marshall wrote, "Holyyyyyyyyyysmokesssssssssss" with fire emojis, while Sage commented, "LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE." Emyrson Flora, Noah's fellow Top 10 contestant, left four heart eyes emojis in the comments section.

American Idol winner Noah might not consider himself a strong songwriter, but his latest original song shows otherwise. It has the sound and lyrics to become a big country music hit. After the success of Noah's single, "One Day Tonight," an original song would be the perfect follow-up. Whatever he decides to do next, Noah's American Idol win is only the beginning of his country music career.
