Top 5 American Idol season 20 finalist Nicolina had some jaw-dropping performances and now she is revealing how she brought them to life. Nicolina is an 18-year-old university student and powerhouse vocalist from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Throughout the competition, she was known for her perfect balance of delicate falsetto and impressive belting. Nicolina wowed the American Idol judges, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan and the audience with her stunning production numbers that added theatrical elements and special effects.

During Nicolina's Disney Night performance of "Poor Unfortunate Souls," the signature song of Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid, she made history as the first finalist to sing a villain's song. To set the mood, she sang on stage with several smoke machines that projected puffs of smoke upward. The lighting enveloped Nicolina in shades of pink, purple, and blue which highlighted her glittering purple costume. For her performance of Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away," Nicolina incorporated a wind machine for dramatic effect. Katy praised her for understanding that the competition is about more than just singing, but also capturing the attention of the audience by adding touches such as wind and smoke to the stage.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Nicolina explained how she created her exciting American Idol performances along with the production crew of the show. She revealed, "A lot of the stuff that I got like the smoke, wind, and all the little fire thingies was done by production for me. There's a creative team at Idol that controls a lot of what happens on the stage and the colors that go into the backgrounds and stuff." Nicolina said that the first time that she got all of the theatrics was for American Idol Disney Night because of her Ursula song. She shared that she was thinking, "You're kidding, right? I get smoke? I get to walk through the wall? What is going on?"

Nicolina went on to say that after Disney Night the cast and crew had a "little running joke" of calling her Ursula for about a week and a half. She said that it led to her always getting the special effects such as the wind machine and the smoke. This was evident in her performances of "Alone" by Heart with its dramatic lighting and "Blown Away" with the wind rushing through her hair and the cape on her outfit. Nicolina added, "And I felt like it was fitting to some capacity because I think I'm super dramatic for no reason all the time. So I just thought it was a great little touch."

Nicolina used the entire American Idol stage in order to create dramatic effect with color, wind, and smoke. Her performances were not just songs but experiences, and she took the audience on a journey with her every time she took the stage. Her creativity and artistry were evident in every week of the competition and enhanced her performances with dazzling visual effects. With her stunning theatrics and soaring vocals, the American Idol audience was blown away by Nicolina.
