Here's every character Matt Bomer has played on American Horror Story. The Ryan Murphy created American Horror Story is an anthology series where each season features a new cast, setting and theme. The first season was a twisted take on a haunted house tale and established the show's formula of classy actors fronting storylines filled with lashings of gore, death and sex. The most recent season was American Horror Story: 1984, which featured homages to classic slashers like Friday The 13th.

While some seasons have featured actors reprising characters from a previous series, the appeal of American Horror Story is how it hits the reset button each year. This robust formula has brought it to nine seasons and counting, with a spinoff show dubbed American Horror Stories also on the way; this show will focus on anthology episodes, instead of focusing on one storyline for a whole season.

American Horror Story has a recurring cast of regulars, including Sarah Paulson, Billie Lourd, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett and many more. Season 4 introduced Matt Bomer in a small role, with the actor later returning for American Horror Story: Hotel in a much bigger part. Various Matt Bomer TV series include the likes of White Collar and Chuck - back when he was still credited as Matthew Bomer - but his dual roles on AHS offered the chance to play with more intense material.

His role in American Horror Story: Freak Show is basically a surprise cameo, and follows the Ryan Murphy tradition of casting prominent actors or celebrities - such as Adam Levine on AHS season 2 - in roles that seem like they'll be important, only to kill them off. In Freak Show Matt Bomer plays Andy, a prostitute who strongman Dell Toledo (Michael Chiklis) has fallen in love with, those Andy rebuffs his advances. Finn Wittrock's Dandy later picks Andy up and lures him to an abandoned bus, where he ambushes and stabs him, before proceeding to dismember the body - while Andy is still alive.

Matt Bomer had a much bigger role on American Horror Story: Hotel, the fifth season. He plays Donovan, the long-term lover of Lady Gaga's Countess, who revived him as a vampire following his death from a drug overdose. Given that this is American Horror Story, needless to say, their relationship is quite twisted, which includes Donavan conspiring to kill her. AHS' Donovan is easily the most memorable of Bomer's roles on the show, though he has yet to return to the hit series.

There were plans for Matt Bomer to return season 6 Roanoke that didn't ultimately come to pass, and he later confirmed he wouldn't be joining the American Horror Story season 7 cast either. Given the elastic nature of the show, Bomer will no doubt reappear on it sometime in the future, while he's also expressed interest in helming an episode of American Horror Stories.
