The test of the Seven Wonders was very important to the hierarchy of the witches in American Horror Story. The seven-step plan forced witches to display certain abilities in order to ascend to Supremacy. The Seven Wonders was featured in both Coven (season 3) and Apocalypse (season 8) when the role of Supreme would soon need to be filled. The series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk heavily focused on the paranormal and supernatural elements so various witches were present throughout the anthology.

In order to become the Supreme Witch, a witch had to pass all seven sections of the Seven Wonders. While most witches had more than one magical power, only a Supreme could exhibit all seven. The series explained that the test was "seven acts of magic so advanced, each pushes the boundaries of craft into art." Though a male had never been a supreme, the warlocks' version of the Supreme was called the Alpha Warlock. The antichrist, Michael Langdon, participated in the test in Apocalypse in which he mastered each power.

The Seven Wonders first came into focus in the witch-centric season, Coven. When Fiona Goode was losing her powers, a new Supreme had to be chosen. Zoe Benson, Madison Montgomery, Misty Day, and Queenie took part in the Seven Wonders as administered by Cordelia Goode and Myrtle Snow. Cordelia later joined the test and ended up becoming the next Supreme. In Apocalypse's erased timeline, Mallory served as the Supreme for a brief time when she defeated the antichrist. Here's every step of the Seven Wonders presented in American Horror Story.

Telekinesis

AHS

A common ability among witches is Telekinesis, or the power to manipulate objects with the mind. The power is multifaceted since it can be used for numerous reasons, either offensive or defensive. Levitation can be used through Telekinesis, which was shown multiple times throughout the series. Zoe, Madison, Queenie, and Misty easily passed this stage of the Seven Wonders in Coven. Michael and Mallory also didn't face any issues in this section of the test in Apocalypse. Other witches and warlock with the power of Telekinesis included Marie Laveau, Stevie Nicks, Scáthach, Behold Chablis, and John Henry Moore.

Concilium

AHS

Concilium, also referred to as mind control or coercion, is another power present in a good percentage of witches. The power gives the caster the ability to impose one's will on another person whether it's through thoughts, memories, or actions. The sharper the mind, the easier it was said to control someone else's with the power. Some witches can resist mind control but it's extremely difficult and dangerous. The young witches in Coven had no issue with Concilium nor did the test-takers in Apocalypse, insinuating that it was another common form of magic.

Transmutation

Transmutation, also known as Teleportation, is the act of moving from one location to another without physically occupying the space in between. The warlocks used the term "Salire per spatium" for the power of Transmutation. When the girls in Coven embarked on this step, Zoe accidentally teleported herself onto a pike in the Academy's gated fence, killing herself. Michael and Mallory passed this stage with ease on their quest to become the Supreme in Apocalypse. Other characters with this power included Prudence Mather, Marianne Wharton, and Scáthach. Ghosts in the series also had the power of transportation, but they were stuck at the property in which they died except for one day a year.

Divination

Divination is the power to acquire knowledge about an object, person, or location without the user's physical senses. The power can additionally be known as "the Sight" and can be used to detect disruptions in the environment, an evil presence, or the use of magic from others. In Coven, Zoe uses Divination to investigate who killed Nan. After chanting the spell, Zoe saw the faces of Fiona and Marie, indicating that they drowned Nan in the bathtub. When Cordelia and Madison were the only two witches left vying for Supreme, the latter failed at Divination, disqualifying herself from the test. Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt memorably had this skill in Apocalypse when she was able to count calories of food by looking at them.

Pyrokinesis

Those with the ability of Pyrokinesis have the power to create, control, and manipulate fire with the mind. Some witches are born with the power of pyrokinesis, while others learn it as they get older. Madison put her Pyrokinesis skill to use multiple times throughout Coven, including lighting Fiona's cigarettes, multiple candles, and the fireplace. Despite being one of the tests of the Seven Wonders, the young witches weren't shown partaking in Pyrokinesis in Coven. The step, however, was shown as part of Michael's big test in Apocalypse when he sliced his hand and used the blood to grow the fire of a candle.

Vitalum Vitalis

AHS

Vitalum Vitalis is one of the most difficult stages of the Seven Wonders. It includes balancing the scales between life and death. Witches can drain their life force in order to restore health, heal injuries, or even resurrect a dead person. It can have serious side effects causing the witch to use Vitalum Vitalis to pass out before their own life force regenerates. After Zoe died during the transmutation stage in Coven, Queenie and Madison were instructed to use Vitalum Vitalis to bring her back. Queenie failed and was disqualified whereas Madison had the ability but refused to resurrect Zoe. Cordelia then entered the Seven Wonders and successfully brought Zoe back to life. As the Supreme in Apocalypse, Cordelia resurrected Mallory, Coco, and Dinah Stevens at the same time.

Descensum

AHS

Descensum stands as the most dangerous step of the Seven Wonders in American Horror Story and the most difficult for a witch to achieve. It's the power to project one's soul to the afterlife and the use of astral projection. When witches descend into the nether world, they are sent to their worst fears or horrible experience from the past. If the witch stays in the plane of the afterlife too long, their body will disintegrate into ash. This happened to Misty during her test, forcing her soul to be stuck in her personal hell. In Apocalypse, Michael notably used Descensum to bring back Queenie and Madison to the real world.
