The range which actor Sarah Paulson has displayed over her nine-season reign on the anthology horror series American Horror Story is impressive, to say the least. American Horror Story is known for its stylized and theatrical approach to horror, relying on melodrama, glitz, and overkill to keep audiences watching. One of the best ways to document the show's reliance on these tropes is by keeping up with the various costumes donned by the cast across all the seasons. Here are the 5 best, and the 5 worst, outfits worn by Sarah Paulson's many characters.

Worst: Billie Dean Howard In Murder House

Sarah Paulson's character in American Horror Story's first season, Murder House.

As medium Billie Dean Howard in the Murder House season, Paulson's business casual look is nothing to write home about. For a show that survives on glamorous excess, Bille Dean's fake pearl necklace and shag rug sweater feel like fashion outliers.

Billie Dean is hired by Jessica Lange's character, Constance Langdon, to help the ghost of her son, Tate, move on to the afterlife. From her press-on nails to her shoulder-length hair curled at the ends, Billie Dean has wannabe celebrity psychic painted all over her. As the season progresses, this turns out to be exactly the case.

Best: Cordelia Goode In Coven

Cordelia Goode's look in the Coven season is refined and classy. As the headmistress of Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies and as the Supreme of the Salem coven, Cordelia carries a large torch that requires posh and sharp costuming.

Cordelia's fashion choices in Coven are both elegant and fierce, hinting at her dark, witchy powers. Even after she's blinded in an acid attack, Cordelia maintains her style with big shades, a black turtleneck, and a classic floral maxi skirt.

Worst: Ally Mayfair-Richards In Cult

Paulson plays the tortured and tormented Ally Mayfair-Richards in the Cult season, a woman targeted by Kai's group in the wake of the 2016 presidential election. Afflicted with multiple phobias, Ally's intense fear of clowns is exploited by the murderous cult attempting to start a chaos-based movement.

Ally spends most of the season screaming and crying as she tries to understand whether she's actually being taunted by people in clown costumes or whether she's having a nervous breakdown. Her outfits are muted and understated, often featuring oversized sweaters that are not very exciting.

Best: Wilhemina Venable In Apocalypse

Plagued by scoliosis and her desire for power in a male-dominated world, Paulson gives a fascinating performance as Wilhemina in the Apocalypse season. Before the apocalypse, Wilhemina is the secretary at Kineros Robotics, working under Jeff and Mutt.

While at Kineros, her signature color is lilac purple, and she rocks it. With her tailored, layered, Victorian work outfit, Wilhemina is an office chic dream. She matches her main pieces with purple leather fingerless gloves and an ornate black belt. Add her cane and vibrant red hair, and Wilhemina has a look to beat here.

Worst: Wilhemina Venable In Apocalypse

Compared to her pre-apocalypse look, the gothic, all-black getup Wilhemina dons as ruler of Outpost 3 is not very becoming. In her defense, the world has ended and she has to maintain a stern, authoritarian look to keep her station in order, but a splash of color wouldn't hurt anyone.

Wilhemina rules with an iron fist, not afraid to execute anyone who doesn't follow her rules, which include never going outside and never engaging in sexual activity. This look in Apocalypse is a reflection of her rigid approach.

Best: Shelby Miller Reenactor In Roanoke

In the meta Roanoke season, Paulson plays actor Audrey Tindall, who portrays the subject of a reality television show about a haunted house in North Carolina. As Shelby Miller, Paulson has a simple and folksy look that suits the tone of her character's circumstances

She wears her hair long, loosely curled, and parted to the left. Donning loose button-up, collared shirts and mom jeans, there's an air of casual neatness to her style here.

Worst: Dot And Bette Tattler In Freak Show

In Freak Show, Paulson plays two conjoined sisters: Dot and Bette Tattler. They are persuaded by Elsa Mars to join her Jupiter, Florida, freak show. Born in Alabama, the sisters have very different personalities. Unfortunately, they must share a body, as well as outfits.

While their style reflects their innocence and purity, they wear muumuu-style dresses that look like they were designed for life-sized dolls. In addition to their lifestyle changes after joining the freak show, they would have benefited from a fashion makeover.

Best: Cordelia Goode In Apocalypse

Supreme witch Cordelia Goode makes a comeback in Apocalypse, looking as stunning as ever. Unlike Wilhemina Venable, Cordelia makes the gothy, post-apocalyptic style look good. With her black parasol and elaborate accessories, Cordelia is a sweeping, powerful sight to behold.

In order to save the world from Michael Langdon, Cordelia ultimately sacrifices herself in order to give Mallory the powers she needs to destroy the Antichrist.

Worst: Sally McKenna In Hotel

As Sally McKenna, one of the many ghosts haunting the hallways of Los Angeles's Hotel Cortez, Paulson is a wavy-haired woman stuck in 1994. With her smeared make-up, bleached locks, and black choker, Sally looks like an extra in a movie about drug addicts.

As it turns out, Sally is a heroin addict, a person as tormented in life as she is in death. Her ripped fishnet stockings and cheetah print jacket are a tough facade, hiding the grieving and traumatized soul underneath. While this isn't Paulson's worst look in the show, it's not her most becoming.

Best: Lana Winters In Asylum

As the resilient and intelligent journalist Lana Winters in Asylum, Paulson's fashion choices are on point, complimenting the '60s and '70s as well as the nature of the woman she's portraying.

Lana, after attempting to expose the negligence and horror happening at Briarcliff, is institutionalized there by Sister Jude, who doesn't want the asylum's dark secrets to be revealed. Lana is tortured and endures some horrific experiences, but ultimately comes out the other side. Her flashy look above, replete with a dramatic fur coat and big sunglasses, is a testament to her status as a survivor.
