Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy's stylish and strange anthology series American Horror Story has so far featured many staples of the horror genre - including ghosts, aliens and witches - but the upcoming fourth season, American Horror Story: Freak Show, will introduce perhaps the most nightmarish creatures ever born from the human imagination: clowns.
One of the most famous (and most horrifying) clowns in the history of horror cinema is Tim Curry's cheerfully demonic Pennywise from It. Fittingly, in one of the newest teasers for American Horror Story's new season, we get to see an imitation of one of the most memorable scenes from it, in which Pennywise opens his mouth to reveal a gaping maw full of nasty teeth. Though it's not as original as some of the other promos for the show, American Horror Story's clown is pretty respectable nightmare fuel in its own right.
The other teaser, titled "Twisted Smile," also conjures up some carnival/circus imagery, which is odd since Murphy has explicitly said that the new season does not take place in a carnival or a circus, but in an independent freak show in Florida circa 1950. American Horror Story: Freak Show will feature a mix of cast members from past seasons and newcomers to the series, some of whom will be transformed to become the "freaks" of the show's title.
The returning cast includes series mainstay Jessica Lange as Elsa Mars, the manager of the show; Sarah Paulson as Bette and Dot Tattler, a set of conjoined twins; Michael Chiklis as strongman Wendell Del Toredo; and Kathy Bates as Effil Darling, the bearded lady. This season will also star regulars Emma Roberts and Evan Peters, American Horror Story: Coven's Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe, and the world's smallest woman, Jyoti Amge.
American Horror Story can be hit and miss, but the teasers for the show are always top notch. Possibly the best promo for American Horror Story: Freak Show so far, however, is a fan-made sequence featuring a 'Fallen Angel' that was so well-made it was mistaken for being an official release. If the next season brings with it as much freaky imagery as the teasers have indicated, viewers could be in for a real treat.
American Horror Story: Freak Show will premiere Wednesday, October 8 @ 10pm on FX.
