A new and sinister teaser has been released for American Horror Story: Apocalypse, offering a glimpse at Sarah Paulson's latest character. Apocalypse is set to be the long rumoured and recently confirmed crossover between season 1, Murder House, and season 3, Coven. As a result, expectations from fans have been extremely high and continue to build. So far, details for the plot remain scarce, though the season will continue the story of Michael Langdon, the antichrist that was born at the end of the first season and last seen in a brief flashforward, under the care of Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange) and murdering his nanny.

Many of the cast of those respective seasons are set to return. A recent American Horror Story cast photo revealed that Lily Rabe, Emma Roberts, Taissa Farmiga, Gabourey Sidibe, Frances Conroy, and Stevie Nicks will each reprise their roles as members of the titular coven of witches, despite the fact some of them met grisly ends. Equally, Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott will return. It's unknown whether they're returning as Ben and Vivien Harmon or if they will be playing new characters. McDermott is, however, reportedly filming at the eponymous Murder House set. Given that they ended the season trapped there as ghosts and that Vivien is the unwitting mother of the aforementioned antichrist, it would make sense.

Thanks to a teaser posted on the official AHS Twitter, though, fans have been given a look at the first brand-new character. Paulson has been a staple of AHS since the first season, appearing in 85 episodes across every season. She recently revealed she'd only be reprising one past character, since confirmed to be Cordelia Goode, last seen assuming leadership over the coven in season 3. The new character, however, couldn't be more different. Dressed mostly in black, she emerges from the shadows and, amid crackling footage, steps up to a bingo machine. Turning it and preparing to reach inside with a gloved hand, she reveals that she is offering people the "chance to be one of the few remaining...one of the few to survive."

The character is reportedly named Venable, and is no doubt offering people a way to make it through the titular apocalypse in one piece. The clip also ends in a very meta fashion, providing a link that leads to a seemingly very real sweepstake. By entering your name and email, fans will apparently be in with a chance to attend an exclusive AHS: Apocalypse experience.

What the teaser means for the plot of the show, especially in relation to the potential conflict between ghosts and witches, remains to be seen. After all, anything is possible in the world of American Horror Story, even without a subtitle referring to the end of the world. The opportunity at salvation is just as likely to be a cruel trick leading people into horrific, violent damnation. Two things are for sure, though. Whether the character turns out to be benevolent or whether she turns out to be malevolent, Paulson has more than proven she has what it takes to make it iconic. And, secondly, fans are going to be even more on tenterhooks waiting for answers.
