American Horror Story has been making us laugh and scream at the top of our lungs for nearly a decade now. Its mixture of comedy and horror make the series truly iconic thanks to Ryan Murphey and the brilliant cast of characters. From Jessica Lange's role as the unstoppable supreme witch to Evan Peters as The Rubber Man (aka father of the antichrist), it's no question that AHS is filled with brilliantly horrifying personalities. These characters and plotlines are so ingenious and memorable that it leaves us thrilled to discover what new people and storylines we will encounter in season 9 of American Horror Story titled 1984.

Here's everything we know so far about the next season:

EVAN PETERS WILL NOT RETURN

Let's just get the bad news out of the way. Our favorite veteran of American Horror Story has announced in an interview that he will not be returning for the next season. According to Peters, he says that he's "going to sit this season out".  The thought of an entire season of AHS without Evan seems rather daunting considering he and Sarah Paulson are the only two actors to be in all eight seasons of the show. What gives, Peters?

While some people might be quick to assume his absence from the next season has something to do with his recent break up with co-star Emma Roberts, this is far from the truth. Peters has revealed the real reason why he is not returning for the next season which is due to the fact that he wants to take a break from the dark roles on AHS in order to work on his music.

This is what Peters had to say about it:  "I'm goofy, I'm silly, I like to have fun. I don't like to yell and scream. I actually hate it. I think it's disgusting and really awful, and it's been a challenge for me. Horror Story sort of demanded that of me."

We totally understand Evan, and we hope you get the break you deserve!

IT WILL LIKELY PREMIERE IN THE FALL

Oh, autumn. There's nothing like it. It is a time of year that is dedicated to over-caffeinating yourself on pumpkin spiced lattes, planning out group Halloween costumes with your friends that usually fall through, and (most importantly) marathoning the latest season of American Horror Story. It's all part of the annual tradition! You get to come across the familiar phases of Sarah Paulson, Emma Roberts, and Jessica Lange as they grace the screen once more. If history will repeat itself, the next season will most likely come out in September, so be sure to binge all of the earlier episodes before then.

Who else can't wait?

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GEORGE ORWELL'S CLASSIC NOVEL

The title of the latest season is slightly misleading, so apologies to Orwell fans. While it would be extremely interesting to witness a season of American Horror Story that deals with "Big Brother" and "The Misistry of Love", the ninth installment of Ryan Murphey's masterpiece will most likely have nothing to do with Orwell's 1949 novel 1984.  That's too bad because it would be a really wonderful idea for a season. Evan Peters would probably make a great Big Brother. In another world, perhaps...

So if it's not going to be about Orwell's dystopian novel, then what is it going to center around exactly?

Find out in the next slide below.

SEASON 9 WILL PAY HOMAGE TO 80S SLASHER MOVIES

American Horror Story loves going back in time and paying homage to different decades. The next season of 1984 will be taking place in (you guessed it) the 80s! When we recall this decade, Madonna, permed hair, and MTV might come to mind, but another vital pop culture mark in the 1980s came from slasher movies. The 1980s offered a number of slasher films such as Friday The 13th  (1980), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), and The Halloween movies 2-5 just to name a few.

Will we get to see Emma Roberts with a perm at all? Watch the next season to find out.

Speaking of Roberts...

EMMA ROBERTS WILL RETURN NEXT SEASON

Phew. You can wipe the sweat off your brow because thankfully our girl Emma will be back for the next season of AHS 1984. Roberts has been working with Ryan Murphey for a while now both on American Horror Story and as her role of Chanel Oberlin on Murphey's Scream Queens. According to Roberts, she says Scream Queens is a mix of "Mean Girls and Friday The 13th".

If the next season of AHS will be paying homage to Friday The 13th, perhaps Roberts will feel familiar with this territory and master the role as she so often does. Will her new character live up to the iconic Madison Montgomery? We will have to wait until the next season to find out.

GUS KENWORTHY WILL PLAY EMMA ROBERTS' BOYFRIEND

While Evan Peters will be taking a much-needed break to focus on his music and mental health, Gus Kenworthy will be stepping in for his first season on American Horror Story season 9. He will be playing Emma Roberts' boyfriend and we are ecstatic to see what he can offer to the series. For those who aren't familiar with Kenworthy, he is a freestyle skier who has won several awards for his talent on the slopes. He is also one of the few openly gay athletes. Ryan Murphey revealed Kenworthy's role on his Instagram account, with the caption "That special moment when you realize you have an Olympic medal AND will be playing Emma Roberts' boyfriend on "American Horror Story" Season 9", featuring a picture featuring the professional skier.

We can't wait to see what he will bring to the show!

SARAH PAULSON HAS NO IDEA IF SHE WILL RETURN

Paulson has been pretty busy lately, working on her latest feature films as the queen of horror. We have recently seen her in movies such as Bird Box, Glass, and Ocean's 8, where we had the treat of witnessing her perform outside of her usual horror genre.

As of now, she is busy filming a new TV series Ratched, where she plays Nurse Mildred Ratched. Of course, it is created by Ryan Murphey. Will the loveable actress be too busy with her other projects to make it in this next season? We certainly hope not because we would love to see Paulson rock the 80s shoulder pad look while simultaneously slaying serial killers. According to SP, "All I can say is I know the least about this season upcoming that I've known about any season. I don't know... yeah, that's all I can say."

Looks like we will just have to sit tight and wait for answers until then.

TWISTY THE CLOWN MIGHT RETURN

If you have a big fear of clowns, you might want to prepare with caution for the next season. Twisty The Clown is one of the most feared villains in American Horror Story which is truly saying something. Twisty is known for jabbing his knife into as many victims as possible, so it would make sense for this character to make a return in a season which is all about slasher killers. It wouldn't be too surprising to see a clown in the next season's 1984 considering how popular the It 2017 remake was which centers around an evil clown in the 1980s. Twisty the Clown has appeared in both Freak Show and Cult so it wouldn't be surprising if he came back for another murder spree.

He sure makes Pennywise look like a decent dude, doesn't he?

1984 WILL TAKE PLACE AT SUMMER CAMP

What's the 1980s without a little summer camp magic? The 80s was a decade that was filled with movies about summer camp, including Meatballs, and of course, Friday the 13th. As we can see in the trailer for the next season, a girl is running through the woods being chased by a large greasy-haired man with a giant knife in his grasp, making it clear that these campgrounds are far from safe.

Considering AHS is best known for its mixture of horror and comedy, perhaps this next season will be "Nightmare on Elm Street meets Wet Hot American Summer". Sounds like a pretty awesome combo.

SEASON 9 WON'T BE THE LAST SEASON

You can finally let out a sigh of relief because 1984 will not be the last season of American Horror Story. In August of 2018, our favorite horror show announced the renewal of the series for 10 seasons. That means we have at least two more seasons to look forward to and we couldn't be happier (or more terrified). There is a whole lot to look forward to in the next season and we can't wait for all the horror to go down in September. If it's anything like the last season, we know it will be epic.

That's all the info we have so far. What are you looking forward to in AHS's 1984?
