What To Expect From American Gods Season 3

American Gods Season 3 Release

American Gods has been renewed for season 3, though only the gods themselves know when fans of the beleaguered series might expect to see it.

Based on the award-winning novel by Neil Gaiman, American Gods has endured more hardships in its first two seasons than many series saw in ten. Premiering to tremendous reviews and solid ratings in April 2017, the show was a certified hit. Unfortunately, Freemantle Media, Starz and book author Neil Gaiman ran into conflicts with original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green over production costs and the show's creative direction. The resulting rift delayed the second season as a new showrunner was found, and the key role of Media was recast when Gillian Anderson left the show in protest.

Things have not got any easier for American Gods in its second season, which saw a major drop in its ratings after the second season premiere. While the audience that remained has been loyal, the reviews for the latest season have been less enthused. Certainly the tone of season 2 has been more sedate compared to the first season, with most of the action being set at Mr. Ibis' funeral home in Cairo, Illinois - a rather dull backdrop compared to the eternal road-trip visiting various gods that lay at the center of season 1. Despite this, the show is returning for a third season, where it has a chance to pull things back on track.

American Gods Has Been Renewed For Season 3

American Gods Mr. World and Technical Boy

Despite falling ratings and lackluster reviews of season 2, American Gods has been renewed for a third season. Charles 'Chic' Eglee will be taking over as showrunner for the new season. A veteran producer who has been working since the 1980s, Eglee has most recently served as a writer and executive producer on Dexter and The Walking Dead. Eglee replaces Jesse Alexander, who had been brought in to replace season 1 showrunners Michael Green and Bryan Fuller.

When Will American Gods Season 3 Release?

No official release date has been announced for American Gods season 3. While a one-year turn around time is typical on a fantasy series like this, the extensive post-production the show requires could delay its return a few months. Additionally, with the show changing showrunners for the second time in as many seasons (a move which delayed the arrival of season 2 by several months), it's possible that we may not see any new episodes until 2021.
