FX released a first look at the forthcoming second season of the true crime anthology series, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Ryan Murphy is back to show us that it's not all glitz and glamour in the fashion world.

Following up the critically acclaimed first season, which focused on the trial of O.J. Simpson, the second season takes on the untimely assassination of world-renowned Italian fashion icon Gianni Versace in Miami in 1997 by spree-killer Andrew Cunanan.

But more than anything, executive producer Nina Jacobson says in the first look video released by FX [above] that American Crime Story explores what exactly "makes this an American crime, a crime America is guilty of." The People v. O.J. Simpson dealt primarily with race, while The Assassination of Gianni Versace looks to be confronting rampant homophobia in American culture. This first look video not only dives into the tragic death of Versace, but also the possible motives that Cunanan might have for committing murder.

Versace's murder shook the fashion world, and his sister had to keep the company together after his death. In the trailer for The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Penelope Cruz as Donatella can be heard saying, "I will not allow that man, that nobody, to kill my brother twice." That nobody, Andrew Cunanan (played by Darren Criss), was known for befriending older, rich gay men, one of which was Versace, and spending their money to impress other people in the local gay community and spent the last three months of his life going on a killing spree that ended with Versace in Miami. This killing spree resulted in a huge manhunt that put Cunanan on the FBI's Most Wanted List. There is still no known motive for his killing spree, so the series looks to be drawing its own conclusions on Cunanan's motives.

Along with Criss, Edgar Ramirez is playing Gianni Versace, Cruz is playing Gianni's sister Donatella and Ricky Martin will play Versace's boyfriend Antonio D'Amico. While the second season doesn't boast the recognizable cast of People v. O.J., it is seeming to step up the game in set design and production. The lavish set design seems to match the fashion world and wealthy communities in Miami. Even without talent like Cuba Gooding Jr. and John Travolta to draw viewers, the performances here look great along with the interesting subject material.
