The limited series tackles the real-life impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, with several notable actors taking on the real figures. Following American Crime Story's take on documenting the murder trial of OJ Simpson in the first season and the second detailing the assassination of Gianni Versace, the third season of the anthology series delves into the scandals of the White House. With such an infamous moment in modern history, the Impeachment cast had a difficult task of portraying these well-known figures.

American Crime Story: Impeachment takes on the infamous sex scandal and the ensuing trial of President Bill Clinton in 1998. The scandal involved Bill Clinton, who was married to future presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, and 22-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The two began a sexual relationship that lasted multiple years, becoming a national sensation after Clinton, in a televised speech, stated he “did not have sexual relations with that woman.” American Crime Story’s third season is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s 1999 book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, and Lewinsky herself served as a producer on the series.

Beanie Feldstein As Monica Lewinsky

The central figure of the 1998 scandal, Monica Lewinsky, was played by Beanie Feldstein. Lewinsky is portrayed throughout the affair and impeachment trial, dealing with one of the most high-profile cases of all time as a young woman while also having her reputation smashed by the opposing side. Even with Lewinsky involved with American Crime Story, the series doesn't gloss over her less flattering aspects during this time, portraying her as a naive young girl who got in way over her head. Yet it also shows the unfair way the entire scandal was placed on her shoulders.

Feldstein is the sister of Oscar-nominated actor Jonah Hill but she has built an incredible career of her own. Feldstein found breakout roles in coming-of-age comedies like Booksmart and Lady Bird. She will next be seen in Ethan Coen's crime movie Drive-Away Dolls and will work with Richard Linklater for the next 20 years on his ambitious musical adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along.

Sarah Paulson As Linda Tripp

Linda Tripp played a key role in the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal as Monica Lewinsky’s close confidant while they both worked together at the Pentagon’s public affairs office, even being one of the few people Lewinsky told before the scandal’s critical stage. She was urged by literary agent Lucianne Goldberg to record her private phone conversations with Lewinsky wherein she prodded her to reveal more information about the affair. Throughout the show, Tripp sees herself as the hero of the story, exposing corruption and getting the recognition she deserves only for the public to despise her deceitful actions.

Tripp was portrayed by Emmy-winning American Horror Story actress Sarah Paulson, who also starred in the first season of American Crime Story as Marcia Clark. She has also starred in movies like 12 Years a Slave, Ocean's 8, and Glass, while remaining a consistent presence on Ryan Murphy shows.

Clive Owen As Bill Clinton

President Bill Clinton is portrayed by English actor Clive Owen. Clinton was in his last term of office during the trial and scandal revelation, facing one of the most infamous presidential trials in history. He ended up being acquitted of perjury and obstruction of justice charges in his impeachment trial, still being able to serve the rest of his term. The show depicts his relationship with Monica as possibly genuinely caring, though his chief concern is how the impeachment process will affect his presidency and how his family reacts to the scandal.

Owen received an Oscar nomination for his role in 2004's Closer. He has also appeared in such notable movies as Inside Man, Sin City, and Children of Men. He will next star as noir legend Sam Spade in the AMC drama Monsieur Spade.

Margo Martindale As Lucianne Goldberg

Character actress Margo Martindale stars in American Crime Story’s third season as Lucianne Goldberg, the literary agent who advised Linda Tripp to secretly record her various phone calls with Monica Lewinsky. Goldberg was later influential in bringing the tapes to light, sending them to opposing Independent Counsel Ken Star and discussing them with the press. Though Goldberg is depicted as pursuing the financial opportunities of the scandal, she also tries to warn Tripp about what will happen to Monica if the scandal breaks.

Martindale is a celebrated actor who won a Primetime Emmy Award for her role as Mags Bennet on TV thriller Justified as well as four Emmy nominations for her great performance as Claudia in The Americans. Most recently, she appeared in the surprise hit Cocaine Bear.

Billy Eichner As Matt Drudge

Billy Eichner plays Drudge Report creator/editor Matt Drudge. Working as an independent journalist despite having no qualifications for the job, he is the head of the first outlet to publish the news of the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. At the end of American Crime Story: Impeachment, Drudge is able to hit the mainstream with a show on Fox News. Eichner is best-known for his series Billy on the Street and as Craig on Parks and Recreation. He also wrote and starred in the acclaimed rom-com Bros.

Edie Falco As Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton is portrayed by Edie Falco. At the time of the trial, Hillary Clinton came under a mountain of press accusations, focusing on how Bill had an affair during their marriage but she remained married to him in the aftermath. She also publicly supported her husband during the trial. The show delves into the heartbreak and disgust she felt due to her husband's betrayal. Falco is a four-time Emmy winner who portrayed Carmela on The Sopranos and the titular role in Nurse Jackie. Recently, she appeared as General Ardmore in Avatar: The Way of Water and stars alongside Pete Davidson and Joe Pesci in the comedy series Bupkis.

Annaleigh Ashford As Paula Jones

The bulk of American Crime Story: Impeachment’s drama begins with the trial of Paula Jones, a former Arkansas state employee who sued Bill Clinton for sexual harassment in 1994. Once Monica Lewinsky and Clinton’s relationship came to light, she is pulled back into the story. The series depicts Jones as another victim of the cruel media cycle and someone pushed aside in the overall narrative of the scandal. Another American Crime Story returning cast member, Jones is played by Annaleigh Ashford who appeared in season 2 as Elizabeth Cote. She also starred in Showtime’s Masters of Sex and Welcome to Chippendales.

Cobie Smulders As Ann Coulter

Cobie Smulders plays controversial right-wing media pundit Anne Coulter who became well-known for her criticisms of the Clinton administration, having a field day during American Crime Story’s central scandal. This helped launch Coulter as an influential conservative voice. Smulders is best known for her Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Nick Fury's sidekick Maria Hill, a role she will return to in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion, and her How I Met Your Mother character Robin Scherbatzky.

Taran Killam As Steve Jones

Former Saturday Night Live cast member and real-life husband of co-star Cobie Smulders, Taran Killam plays Steve Jones, the husband of Clinton accuser Paula Jones. Steve was known to be aggressive and hostile with the media which is also depicted in American Crime Stories: Impeachment. He is shown to be a true villain who berates his wife and is only concerned with how her scandal benefits him.
