NBC's newest hit comedy, American Auto, is a whirlwind of a show. Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer, Jon Barinholtz, and more talented actors, this sitcom revolves around an American automobile company trying to manage daily problems under a new CEO.

In usual sitcom comedy fashion, the difficult situations are often handled poorly, but fixed in the end. American Auto is everything a sitcom is and more with a vast number of downright funny lines. However, there are a few quotes that stand as absurdly hilarious.

Chass-e Like Gassy

"Chass-e, Oh, Like Gassy. I Was Feeling Very Gassy When I Got On My Chasse."

Katherine Hastings talking into microphones and smiling in American Auto

In the first episode of American Auto, "Pilot", Katherine Hastings comes into Payne Motors as the new CEO. Played by the hilarious Ana Gasteyer from Mean Girls as Cady Heron's mom, Hastings is a self-centered, determined woman that is often all over the place. As she is walking down a hall with Sadie, Hastings asks her how to pronounce "chasse".

Chasse is defined as a movement in which one puts one foot in place of the other, typically in ballet. Hastings has no idea what chasse means or how to use it. The funny and concerning question becomes, what does she think it means?

Dori Has To Learn Technology In Less Than A Day

"The Most Technology I Know How To Use Is My Hair Curler And My Vibrator. Right? Mm, But I Will Figure It Out Because I'm A Professional."

Dori at her office in American Auto

Later in the pilot episode, Hastings runs into Wesley Payne and Dori who are having a casual conversation. Hastings asks Dori to take any calls while she is at the test track and handle all the AV aspects and equipment for the big presentation.

Just a simple task learning what the AV equipment is, does, and how to use it, right? Dori's missed attempt to deflect the task to someone else by making Hastings laugh is comical to watch and hear because Hastings does not react. Dori is left with the fact that she will have to learn AV in under 12 hours because she is "a professional".

The World's First Racist Car

"The Car's Not Racist. Race Is About A Shared Culture, History, And Traditions. This Just Doesn't See Darker Skin."

Sadie and Jack talking in American Auto

As they are test driving their first self-driving car, the car does not break and hits Jack. Jack, played by Tye White who played O.J.'s son in American Crime Story, is a black male line worker at Payne that later is promoted upstairs. Cyrus Knight, the CTO of Payne Motors, reveals that the car does not register darker objects including darker skin people.

The idea that a huge car company could have so much money, technology, and smart workers, yet somehow design such a poor and offensive car is comical. Especially because Cyrus is a black man himself, is in charge of everything technology, and is the one saying this line.

Cyrus's Hysterical Description Of The Ponderosa

"It Looks Like If Bjork Were Driving To The Oscars And Got In A Head-On Collision With Blossom On The Way To The Prom, And Then The Car Was Reassembled By A Blind Villager From A Tribe That Had Never Seen Technology And A Spider On LSD Who Also Had Bad Taste."

Cyrus in a car in American Auto

At the end of "Pilot", Cyrus, played by Michael Benjamin Washington recently seen as Bernard in Boys In The Band, is asked by Hastings what he thinks of the car. Cyrus does not hold back. He compares the car's unique and baffling look to that of Icelandic singer Bjork and beyond. As Cyrus is describing the wild car, viewers have no idea what it looks like.

All people can go on is this very descriptive, long, and petrifying description of what the Ponderosa looks like. Viewers cannot stop laughing more and more as he slowly describes it as it leaves them crying.

Getting Sued Is Normal

"We're Getting Sued By Thousands Of People Every Day."

The cast of American Auto

In the second episode of American Auto, "White Van", Hastings and the group are looking for a positive story to get the attention off their bad performance. Elliot, Payne Motors chief lawyer played by Humphrey Ker of Mythic Quest including the "Quarantine" episode, tells them that Payne gets sued every day.

He then adds that the FBI is looking into a serial killer driving around in a Payne vehicle killing people. Payne is in complete disarray, getting sued much like countless major businesses do in real life, and wants to use a serial killer story to help get the bad news off them. It's complete nonsense yet completely comical.

Being Indecisive Or An Accessory To Murder

"I Don't Know. It's Hard."

Katherine at her office in American Auto

Hastings and Payne are left questioning what stance they should take. Do they help the FBI or continue to fight the subpoena as a way to protect people's privacy? Hastings does not want to appear indecisive as the new CEO all while not trying to be seen helping a serial killer.

When she replies to Sadie's question of which side she would rather take, Hastings delivers this quote like a child pouting, not wanting to do chores. It may be concise, but it delivers a punch of comedy to a completely absurd dilemma.

Fireman Fantasy

"Well, That Ruined My Fireman Fantasy."

Cyrus during a presentation in American Auto

As a way to better their public appearance in "White Van", Hastings, Sadie, and Cyrus are sitting in a victim's wife's house before an interview. She tells them that she would like to donate her husband Clive's skin to someone like a firefighter to which Cyrus kindly responds, "Sounds hot".

Hastings later gifts her a 2022 Payne Magellan and the widow gives a message that is utterly anti-LGBTQIA and bad. Seen at the very end of the episode sitting together in the office are the three Payne workers watching the press conference from earlier. It completely ruins Cyrus's "fireman fantasy", a sad but hilarious moment to cap off the episode.

Wesley Knows A Guy

"No, He's, Like, Super Legit. He Uses Burner Phones. He's Untraceable."

Wesley and Jack in American Auto

In the third episode, "Earnings Call", Cyrus asks Elliot for legal help because he may have committed insider trading. Elliot tells Cyrus to enjoy prison. Wesley who is listening in on the conversation, tells Cyrus that he knows a guy that can help. This mysterious contact uses a burner phone and is "super legit" according to Wesley, played by Jon Barinholtz from Superstore, who does little to nothing for the company given the family name.

Wesley's sketchy character is identical to that of Marcus from Superstore. When someone says they know a guy, especially one that uses burner phones, it's sketchy, but Barinholtz has a knack for making audiences cry of laughter from it.

Forgetting To Mute

"I'm Sorry, Did You Wanna Put Us On Mute?"

Dori, Jack, and Wesley in American Auto

As the episode continues, the main group learns that Hastings is making a substantial amount of money as people are being asked to make cuts and an ongoing audio quarterly earnings call. Cyrus and Sadie at one point discuss this new information aloud to each other but Dori, portrayed by X Mayo of The Daily Show, tells them that they are not on mute.

She thought Sadie wanted to mute those listening from speaking, not themselves. Questions and raised hands come pouring in and the three of them start internally panicking. Dori's simple question leaves Sadie and Cyrus with priceless and speechless reactions that are unquestionably funny.

A Relatable Everyday Question

"Like, What Is The Point Of My Job?"

Sadie smiling and talking to someone in American Auto

In the fourth episode, "The $10k Car", Sadie asks a basic question within the first 15 seconds. Sadie, played by Harriet Dyer who starred as Emily in The Invisible Man, understands fully her job as head of communications but does not understand the point of it. Sadie is constantly bending over backward and stressing non-stop to help the company run but is jabbed with constant unnecessary and obscure problems.

Almost every adult viewer has had a job at some point where they have asked, "What is the point of my job?' and this time the delivery is laughable because of its relatability.
