Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Xochitl Gomez recently addressed the future of her character, America Chavez, in the MCU. The Sam Raimi film finds its titular superhero teaming up with Chavez, an inter-dimensional teenager with powers that allow her to create portals into different universes. However, she has no control over her abilities, thrusting both herself and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) through various worlds in an attempt to escape Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) who wants Chavez's powers to reunite with her children.
By the end of the film, Chavez finally manages to manipulate her powers properly and defeats Wanda by revealing the villain's true nature to her alternate dimension children. With nowhere else to go, Chavez joins Sorcerer Supreme Wong (Benedict Wong) at Kamar-Taj, the training grounds for the Masters of the Mystic Arts. There, she begins her training as a sorcerer, likely learning to her control her multi-dimensional portal powers.
In a recent interview with Collider, Gomez discussed where Chavez is headed in the future of the MCU following the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The star explained that after Doctor Strange helped her over the course of the film, choosing not to sacrifice her to absorb her powers, she is once again learning to trust. But Wong is also guiding her at Kamar-Taj with "discipline and structure," thereby setting her up for a possible leadership role later on. Read what Gomez said below.
"Well, I mean, at this point, you know…she's getting over her trust issues, obviously. And I feel like she just needs a place to call home and she needs some discipline and structure in her life. And I think Wong is doing that. But I think one thing she definitely needs to learn is she needs to learn to work with others. Obviously, she's been working alone, and she's also just been destined to be a leader. So in order to be a leader, you also have to learn to work with others and help one another. And I think she has the qualities to be an amazing leader, but I think there's a few other things she has to learn first."
Gomez's comments imply that Chavez may end up being a part of a team in the near future, perhaps becoming a de facto leader of the group. As with the nature of the MCU, her teaming up with other Marvel superheroes is inevitable. However, becoming a part of an actual team akin to the Avengers may be in her future. Although Chavez's introduction was in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the character was originally supposed to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home with Tom Holland, being the one who transported both previous theatrical versions of Spider-Man into the MCU. However, due to the pandemic, release dates were shuffled, resulting in both films being rewritten.
With the MCU films and television series continually introducing young superheroes, many have speculated that the franchise is setting up the Young Avengers superhero team for Phase 6. In the comics, Nathaniel Richards, a version of Kang the Conqueror, arrives in the past and forms a team of superheroes related to the Avengers. This team consisted of young heroes such as Kate Bishop, Eli Bradley, Cassandra Lang, Speed, Wiccan, and America Chavez. Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) has also been a frequent partner to Chavez. Although Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may have just recently introduced Chavez to the MCU, she will likely play a crucial role in the battles to come.
