As the GPU war with Nvidia continues to heat up, AMD is preparing to launch another Radeon RX 6000 graphics card soon. Over the last half a year, multiple new graphics cards have arrived from both AMD and Nvidia. However, getting hold of many of them has proved far more difficult than it should have been.
The Radeon RX 6000 family was first officially unveiled by AMD in October of 2020, although official leaks and speculation dripped through during the many months before the launch event. This is the company’s direct attempt to compete with Nvidia’s RTX 30-series graphics cards, which launched shortly before the Radeon RX 6000 series. However, Nvidia has continued to launch new additions to the RTX 30 lineup since then, and it looks like AMD is now about to do the same.
AMD has confirmed that it will be hosting another product event on March 3, 2021. The event is due to take place at 11 a.m. Eastern and it is likely to be in the form of a recorded video presentation, considering both of the previous Radeon and Ryzen "Where Gaming Begins" events were. Along with the confirmation of the date and time, AMD also made it clear the event is to showcase “the latest addition” to the RX 6000 card lineup. However, beyond confirming the what and the where, AMD did not provide any additional details. Although the image included with the launch event announcement does not seem to be for any of the previously announced RX 6000 cards.
The Latest Graphics Card Chapter
So far, AMD has announced three different RDNA 2 architecture graphics cards. The cheapest is the RX 6800 at $579, followed by the $649 RX 6800 XT. The last, and most powerful option is the $999 RX 6900 XT. Likewise, Nvidia first announced three Ampere architecture graphics cards. In ascending price (and power) order, they are the $499 GeForce RTX 3070, the $699 RTX 3080, and the $1,499 RTX 3090. However, since then, Nvidia has also launched two more graphics cards and both of them are cheaper (when you can buy them) than all of the previous RTX 30-series cards. The RTX 3060 Ti arrived first priced at $399 while the standard RTX 3060 was only announced last month, dropping the entry price down to $329.
While it remains to be seen whether the newest AMD Radeon RX 6000 graphics card will be at the higher or lower end of the company’s lineup, it would make sense for it to be a cheaper option to take on the newer cards released by Nvidia. Although, if the recent trend continues, then it would seem likely that a more affordable AMD alternative to Nvidia’s RTX 3060 and 3060 Ti might only further add to the shortage problems the graphics card market has been facing recently, instead of helping solve them.
