This week (October 4), Amazon Prime Video is adding movies that include a drama, a psychological thriller, and a romantic comedy, as well as the final season for a post-apocalyptic horror TV show. Although a lot of studios are pushing their larger releases back into movie theaters for big theatrical releases as parts of the world reopen around the coronavirus pandemic, many viewers are choosing to wait for new releases to hit their streaming services. This week, Amazon Prime Video is adding a nice range of content to satisfy any taste.
Last week, Amazon Prime Video added The Kitchen, a crime film starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elizabeth Moss; Ammonite, a period romantic drama starring Kate Winslet; Us, a horror movie from Jordan Peele starring Lupita Nyong'o; and Happy Death Day 2U, a black comedy horror sequel. The service also added several complete TV shows including every season of 90210 and the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch. As it was the start of the month, there were also a lot of older movies added to the Amazon Prime Video line up.
Amazon Prime Video’s monthly release schedule means that their releases are spread out through each week. New content includes movies that are coming to streaming for the first time ever, TV series, and older movies that are being added to Amazon’s streaming service for the first time. Here’s everything that is coming to Amazon Prime Video during the week of October 4.
The Goldfinch – October 4
The first movie coming to Amazon this week is John Crowley’s The Goldfinch. Based on the book of the same name by Donna Tartt, the movie follows the story of Theodore Decker (Ansel Elgort). When at an art museum, an explosion from a terrorist bombing kills Theordore’s mother and in the confusion afterwards a dying man convinced him to steal a painting. The film explores Theo’s life in the aftermath of the traumatic and strange event. The Goldfinch will be available to stream on Amazon Prime on October 4.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond (Season 2) – October 4
A spinoff show to The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond follows a series of younger protagonists as it explores the effects of coming of age in the zombie apocalypse. The series releases one episode a week, first appearing on AMC (and a week early on AMC+) and then being available on Amazon Prime Video the following day (to purchase at $1.99 for Standard Definition and $2.99 for HD).
Joker – October 8
October 8 will see the arrival of the Joaquin Phoenix-fronted Joker. Based on the DC character whose origin story is always hard to pin down, the film attempts to provide a possible backstory for the character. The Movie is a psychological thriller set in 1981 and is a loose adaptation of The Killing Joke. The movie is not connected to the rest of the DC live-action adaptations and is the first Batman film to receive an R-rating in theaters.
Wild Mountain Thyme – October 8
Wild Mountain Thyme is an Irish romantic comedy that stars Emily Blunt, Jamie Dornan, Jon Hamm, Dearbhla Molloy, and Christopher Walken. An Irish family enters a period of turmoil when the head of the family announces his plans to pass their farm on to an American Nephew, rather than his own son. The film becomes available on October 8.
New To Amazon Prime
Coming to Amazon Prime Video for the first time this week is the 2005 stop-motion clay-animated film Wallace and Gromit. A perfect family film for October, the movie is a supernatural comedy parody of old horror movie tropes. The movie stars Peter Sallis, Ralph Fiennes, and Helena Bonham Carter and will be available on October 7.
