This week Amazon Prime Video is adding an animated adaptation of a fantasy web series, a science fiction drama, and an action thriller. Many studios are moving back to full theatrical releases for their major movies, but some new movies are still coming directly to streaming, as with Hotel Transylvania: Transformania releasing directly on Prime Video in early January. However, even when movies see large theatrical releases, streaming platforms like Prime Video are regularly receiving new movies only shortly after their initial release, meaning that viewers who would rather stay home can still keep up to date on the latest movies, as well as catching up with classics and new TV series on Prime Video.
Last week, Prime TV added the critically acclaimed Iranian film A Hero about a man attempting to clear his debt and stay out of debtor’s prison who ends up at the center of a media circus. Amazon also debuted the full first season of the TV show As We See It which follows the lives of three fictional people living on the autism spectrum and are portrayed by actors who are themselves on the spectrum. Finally, the streaming platform added the September 2021 release My Son, a mystery thriller fronted by James McAvoy The Crown star Claire Foy. Amazon also added a selection of classic movies to Prime TV.
Many streaming services operate on a weekly release schedule which means that all of their releases happen on a single day. Amazon’s Prime Video and IMDb TV, however, both use a monthly cycle that results in the new content on the services being spread out across the week and the month. The new content usually consists of some Amazon Original and IMDb original content, movies and TV shows that are arriving on streaming for the very first time, and some older media that is making its debut on Amazon’s platforms in particular. Here is everything that Amazon is adding to Prime TV during the week of January 24.
The Legend of Vox Machina– January 28
On January 28, Prime TV will receive the first three episodes of the Amazon original series The Legend of Vox Machina, and another three episodes will be released each Friday until all twelve episodes have been aired. The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated adaptation of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role that has been ongoing since 2015. The series will present an adaptation of the early Critical Role sessions with the first two episodes of the series providing a whole new story before going into the Briarwood narrative. The full cast from the Critical Role web series will be returning for The Legend of Vox Machina (except for Orion Acaba who left the campaign after only 27 sessions), this includes voice actors such as Ashley Johnson (Ellie in The Last of Us), Travis Willingham (Roy Mustang in Full Metal Alchemist), and Laura Bailey (Nadine Ross in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End).
Needle In A Timestack – January 28
Also on January 28, John Ridley’s Needle In A Timestack will come to Prime Video. The film is a science-fiction love story starring Leslie Odom Jr., Freida Pinto, Cynthia Erivo, and Orlando Bloom. In a world where time travel is possible, Nick (Odom) is happily married to Janine (Erivo), Tommy’s (Bloom) ex-wife. Tommy takes a time jaunt to the past and saves his marriage, committing a time crime and changing the course of Nick’s romantic life. Sensing that something has changed, Nick sets out to reclaim his life.
Copshop – January 28
Gerard Butler, Frank Grillo, and Alexi Louder star in the action thriller Copshop, originally released in theaters in September 2021 but coming to Amazon’s Prime Video on January 28. Copshop sees the con artist Teddy Murretto (Grillo) getting himself arrested by a rookie detective, Valerie Young (Louder), in an attempt to escape the hitman Bob Viddick (Butler). Viddick also gets himself arrested so he can attempt to complete his contract in this action movie that sees a small-town police station turned into a battleground.
Movies New To Amazon Prime Video
As well as adding brand new content and Amazon Originals, Prime Video also regularly bolsters its collection of older movies throughout the month and these are available to Amazon Prime subscribers at no extra cost. This week, Prime TV will add three thrillers from M. Night Shyamalan. Signs (2002) stars Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix in a science fiction mystery-thriller based around a farmer who discovers a message hidden in his fields’ crop circles. Unbreakable (2000) follows a security guard who is approached by an eccentric comic book collector who believes that the guard has a superpower. The movie stars Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson and was the first in a trilogy that concluded with Split and Glass. The third movie from Shyamalan comes on January 28 with The Village (2004) and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Adrien Brody as inhabitants of an isolated village who live in fear of the unnamed humanoid creatures that live in the woods around them. In a similar vein, January 26 will bring Danny Boyle’s 2007 science-fiction thriller Sunshine, which stars Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, and Benedict Wong as a team of astronauts attempting to restart the solar system’s dying sun.
For something a little bit lighter, towards the end of the week Prime Video will be receiving two comedy classics from the 1990s. On January 27, Cameron Diaz’s 1998 romantic comedy There’s Something About Mary will be available. The movie also stars Matt Dillon, Ben Stiller, Lee Evans, and Chris Elliot as men who are vying for Mary’s (Diaz) love. On January 29, the Adam Sandler sports comedy, The Waterboy will join Amazon’s lineup and provides the story of Sandler’s Bobby Boucher Jr. move from the role of water boy for a college football team to that of a violent linebacker.
New To IMDb TV
Amazon Prime Video allows Amazon to provide a range of movies and TV series to viewers with a Prime subscription. However, Amazon also owns IMDb TV, an ad-supported streaming service where there are no additional fees to be paid. Starting on January 24, they’ll be adding brand new episodes of Judge Judy Justice, the Judge Judy revival show that is returning after its holiday hiatus and will see a new episode every day. IMDb TV will also be streaming the 2012 movie Won’t Back Down from January 21. Starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, and Holly Hunter, the film follows two mothers who make it their mission to improve their children’s Pittsburgh school in the face of corruption and bureaucracy.
