This week Amazon Prime Video is adding a critically acclaimed Iranian movie, an Amazon Original series about people living on the autism spectrum, and a mystery thriller. With the resurgence of coronavirus variants, some studios are starting to shift their content back to streaming and abandoning their planned theatrical releases. This is the case across virtually all major streaming platforms, with Pixar's Turning Red now coming exclusively to Disney+ and Hotel Transylvania: Transformania releasing directly on Prime Video last week, despite the first three films in the franchise generating more than $1 Billion at the box office.

Last week, Prime TV received brand new episodes of the Amazon Original children’s TV show Do, Re & Mi. The show stars Kristen Bell, Jackie Tohn, and Luke Youngblood and sees the characters exploring the musical world of Beebopsburgh. As noted, Amazon also added Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, which sees most of the original cast return for a new set of hijinks surrounding a “Monsterfication Ray,” but with Adam Sandler not returning to voice Dracula for undisclosed reasons. Prime Video also added a series of older movies including Colombiana, A Sort of Homecoming, The Intouchables, Twinsanity, Squad Goals, and The Master.

New content added to Amazon’s Prime Video can usually be expected to include some Amazon Original Movies and TV series, content that is arriving on streaming for the first time ever, and some older content that is making its Prime Video debut. January is often a slower time of the year for new releases as most studios build their release calendars around summer blockbusters and the runup to the winter holidays. This week sees Amazon continuing to build the Prime Video library of older movies while also adding some brand-new content. Here is everything that Amazon is adding to Prime Video during the week of January 17.

A Hero – January 21

A Hero 2021 Wide

A Hero is the first new movie to come to Prime Video this week. The critically acclaimed Iranian film, written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, was originally screened at the Cannes Film Festival, but will now be available for streaming for the first time. A Hero follows Rahim (Amir Jadidi) as, on a two-day leave from debtor’s prison, he attempts to clear his debt and avoid having to return. However, when he makes a charitable act with questionable motivations, he becomes the center of a media circus that complicates his whole situation. Steam A Hero on Prime Video starting January 21.

As We See It (Season 1) – January 21

On January 21, Amazon will add all 8 episodes of As We See It season 1 to Prime Video. From Jason Katims, known for writing Friday Night Lights, the new series follows three twentysomethings—Jack (Rick Glassman), Harrison (Albert Rutecki), and Violet (Sue Ann Pien)—who are all on the autism spectrum and have recently moved into a shared apartment together. The series sees the three of them work to navigate issues related to jobs, friends, and love in a world designed for neurotypicals. The Amazon Original TV show also includes stories tied to their families and the aide working to help all of them with their journey towards independence and acceptance. Crucially, the three lead actors in As We See It identify as being on the autism spectrum themselves (via Distractify) making it an important step for representation.

My Son – January 21

James McAvoy in My Son

My Son was originally released in theaters on September 15, 2021 to extremely limited critical reviews and poor audience reviews, but now has a second chance to impress on Prime TV. The mystery thriller from director Christian Carion is a remake of the French film Mon garçon. In My Son, Edmond Murray, played by James McAvoy, joins the search for his son’s disappearance. After meeting with his ex-wife Joan (Claire Foy) and her new partner, Frank (Tom Cullen), Edmond begins his own investigation into his son’s disappearance with the occasional aid of Inspector Roy (Gary Lewis).

Movies New To Amazon Prime Video

Moulin Rouge cast in an expansive scene.

As well as adding brand new content and Amazon Originals, Prime Video also regularly bolsters its collection of older movies throughout the month and these are available to Amazon Prime subscribers at no extra cost. On January 17, Amazon will add Juno, the classic 2007 coming-of-age comedy-drama that helped to launch the careers of both Elliot Page and Michael Cera. On January 21, Prime TV will also receive The Proposal from 2009, a romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, with a memorable performance from the late Betty White.

Finally, on January 19, Amazon will add three movies to Prime Video that cover the turn of the century. Office Space from 1999 is a satirical black comedy and a cult classic starring Rong Livingston and Jennifer Aniston that focuses on the weary lives of people working at a tiresome software company. Me, Myself & Irene is another black comedy, this time from 2000, and stars Jim Carrey as a state trooper who has spent years suppressing his anger and ultimately suffers a mental breakdown that leads to the creation of an alter ego called Hank. The 2001 musical Moulin Rouge! rounds out Amazon’s Prime Video selection with Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème derived plot led by Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman.

Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska in 2018 film Damsel

Prime Video allows Amazon to provide a range of movies and TV series to viewers with a Prime subscription. However, Amazon also owns IMDb TV, an ad-supported streaming service where there are no additional fees to be paid. In January they’re adding a black comedy western from 2018. Damsel stars Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, and David Zellner, who also wrote and directed the film alongside Nathan Zellner. The movie sees Pattinson’s Samuel Alabaster, a pioneer in the frontier days, hire a drunkard named Parson Henry (Zellner) to officiate a wedding and the two begin a journey across the frontier with a miniature horse named Butterscotch in tow. Damsel currently has a 67% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes and arrives on streaming ahead of Robert Pattinson's highly anticipated debut as Gotham City's Dark Knight in The Batman.
