Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series has cast Will Poulter in a lead role. Penned by Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings is one of the best-selling novels of all time and spawned a slew of epic film adaptations helmed by Peter Jackson. Two years ago, Amazon shook the fantasy world when they ordered a Lord of the Rings TV series with a multi-season commitment. Despite production being underway, major details have been concealed about the upcoming fantasy series.
Set in a period long before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, the series takes place on the J.R.R. Tolkein timeline known as The Second Age. Lasting 3,441 years, marking the One Ring's conception, and ending with the defeat of Sauron’s army, The Second Age certainly offers plentiful story arcs and fresh faces for the saga. Recently, Amazon announced its endeavor to produce 20 episodes for the first season. The streaming service has garnered hype for this massive undertaking and it’s led to the speculation that Lord of the Rings could be the next Game of Thrones. Sans an official title, the series recently cast actress Markella Kavengeh. The Australian actress will play a character named Tyra. Never mentioned in Tolkien’s work, Tyra is either a decoy name or character invented for the series. Now, the project has added another player.
According to Variety, Poulter has been tapped for a leading role in the Lord of the Rings series. Character details, including Poulter’s character name, are being kept under wraps. Cast in an unspecified leading role, Poulter's character possibilities from Tolkein's world are endless. English actor Poulter retains an impressive list of credits to his name with lead roles in Black Mirror, Bandersnatch, and Midsommar. Before those projects, Poulter displayed his acting chops in The Maze Runner franchise and The Revenant.
Having outbid Netflix for the rights, Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings show could be the most expensive TV series of all time. Hailing from Flash Gordon’s writing duo of Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, The Lord of the Rings series is in the creative hands of consultant Bryan Cogman (Game of Thrones), writer Gennifer Hutchinson (Breaking Bad), and J.A. Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) - who’s been tapped to direct multiple episodes. The seasoned creative team also includes Lindsey Weber, Gene Kelly, Bruce Richmond, and Sharon Tal Yguado.
Poulter is the perfect addition to the cast and elusiveness of the Lord of the Rings series. The talented actor translates a thoughtfulness, wisdom, and intelligence to the screen, and will effortlessly fit into Tolkein’s world. Given the actor’s age, Poulter could fulfill the role of Isildur, Baldor, a young Aragorn, or a brand-new role entirely. No doubt Poulter will soon be joined by established players to round out the cast and bring Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series to life.
