Amazon's comedic take on the lifestyle of action superstar Jean-Claude Van Damme only lasted for one season before it was spin-kicked into the dumpster. That's a shame, because Jean-Claude Van Johnson, while bizarre (to say the least), had quite a few laughs going for it. The show focused on Van Damme's semi-fictional status as a washed-up former Hollywood star struggling to keep it all together after giving up his dual identity as a secret agent.

The show is riotously funny for putting Van Damme in the hot seat and cranking out laugh after laugh at his expense. A good sport, to be sure! Here are 10 ways Van Damme made fun of himself in Jean-Claude Van Johnson.

His Obsession With Coconut Water

Van Damme seems to have an unhealthy obsession with coconut water, so much so that he keeps a constant supply of it in his house. The madness, however, doesn't stop there, as Van Damme has seemingly pumped the stuff throughout the entire plumbing system of his home, including the showers.

Later on during Jean-Claude Van Johnson's season, Van Damme showers the old fashioned way with multiple cartons of coconut water piled high and deep. When a one-night stand claims she doesn't understand his fascination with coconut water, Van Damme replies "Of course not," matter-of-factly.

His Failed Star Status

While the real Jean-Claude Van Damme is easily recognizable as a movie legend, his Van Johnson counterpart seems way too hard on himself. At multiple points throughout the series, Van Damme portrays himself as a washed-up has-been who nobody recognizes, anymore.

The funniest and yet most heartbreaking scene involves two young girls who ask him to take a picture of them, while Van Damme believes they want a picture with him. All this, while cleaning pigeon poop off a memorial statue crafted in his honor.

His Out Of Shape Body

While his heart is in the right place, Van Damme's physique is clearly somewhere else. He makes every attempt to lampoon himself by hitting the weights in one of the series' most hilarious moments. After failing to bench press his traditional weight, Van Damme keeps knocking the peg lower and lower, struggling each time.

Van Damme is even out of his element when it comes to hitting the heavy bag – something which used to be his forte. It's a great moment that establishes Van Damme's intention to make fun of himself for the sake of the audience, which is no easy feat for an action movie star.

His Out Of Practice Fighting Skills

Clearly believing that he's got the fighting skills to handle his dual identity as a secret agent, Van Damme infiltrates a shipping yard filled with villains in the first episode, only to realize he's a bit outclassed.

After spending the first episode awkwardly regaining his momentum (only to get punched in the face accidentally by another actor during a filming sequence), Van Damme fails to execute his signature split-punch before taking a metal baton to the face.

His Drug Dealing Skills

Clearly influenced by his own unrealistic movie roles, Van Damme tries to hit up a local drug lord for a narcotic known as H.K., consisting of heroin cut with ketamine. Rather than pitch on the down low, Van Damme comes right out in front of everyone and proclaims his intentions.

It's more than enough for his drug lord contact to become a little suspicious, prompting Van Damme to break out the psych tactics by sweetening the pot with a series of incentives, all of which bear a striking similarity to plot points in Universal Soldier, Nowhere To Run, and Hard Target.

His Doppelgangers

Van Damme played dual roles before in the classic action hit Double Impact, but he takes the formula in a much different direction for Van Johnson. Here, JCVD plays a fictionalized version of his real self, and his own doppelganger Filip, a guy who just happens to be a huge fan.

After Van Damme ruins his life and puts him in the crosshairs of a mercenary group, the awkward, cowardly Filip gets a chance for revenge, and it plays out as silly as one might expect. It's a rare chance to see Van Damme play completely opposite his type.

His Blockbuster Base Of Operations

While shows like Cobra Kai have used the traditional video rental store as a running gag, only Van Damme could turn it into a full-fledged base of operations. After fleeing his villainous former employer Jane, Van Damme and Vanessa retreat to an abandoned Blockbuster Video, turning it into their HQ.

There, Van Damme teaches Vanessa the finer points of martial arts combat, even using VHS tape as hand-bindings – a nod to his classic action vehicle Kickboxer. An outdated man stuck in an outdated time period? Perhaps, but Van Damme doesn't seem to care one bit!

His Drifting Skills

For a guy as cool and suave as Jean-Claude Van Damme, he can't seem to drive worth a hoot. He decides to infiltrate an underground street race to get close to a local drug kingpin, showing up in the worst car on planet Earth, for which he can't even drive stick properly.

The show then lampoons Van Damme in hilarious fashion after he blindfolds himself, and somehow manages to drift his way effortlessly around the track, while his drug lord opponent barely makes it out of the parking garage before bursting into flames. When the blindfold comes off, Van Damme has trouble getting out of first. Simple, effective, and funny.

His Movie Role

To conceal his secret agent identity and mission, Van Damme's handler Jane manages to snag him a starring role in an action movie take on the classic literary work Huckleberry Finn, which is about as ridiculous as it sounds. After Van Damme kills several mercenaries who infiltrate the shoot while the cameras are rolling, the production gets progressively out of control.

If nothing else, at least Van Damme was saved from having to bear the humiliation of starring in one of the most pointless and offensive literary adaptations ever committed to film.

His Winning Splits

Van Damme has two signature moves – his leaping reverse kick and his split-punch. The latter is used to comedic effect early in the season, but it plays a pivotal role in the final episode. Rather than showcase Van Damme beating up scores of bad guys, the episode subverts expectations by having Van Damme stop vertical hangar bay doors from opening, using the power of his legs.

While this scene is a nod to Van Damme's infamously funny commercial showcasing the move on board two Volvo trucks, it's also used to drive home dramatic effect, as well. Either way, Van Damme seems to have no trouble using this move for self-deprecation.
