Amazon has announced new models of its entry-level Kindle and Kindle Kids, bringing much-needed upgrades. The Kindle is practically the most popular e-reader in the world. Although there are multiple other e-ink readers on the market, some of which even pack better specifications than Amazon offers, such as the Huawei MatePad Paper.

The base model Kindle is its cheapest and the smallest in the lineup. There is also the Kindle Paperwhite, the Paperwhite Signature Edition, and the Kindle Oasis which is the most premium model. Some of these more expensive models have wireless charging, water resistance, page turn buttons, and even cellular connectivity.

The new e-reader still has thick bezels around the display, but unlike its predecessor, whose plastic front is curved to meet the back in the middle to form two halves of the frame, the front on the new model is flat. This means the plastic back fully wraps around the four sides of the device. This design change gives the Kindle a modern look. The spec sheet also reveals that the e-reader is smaller and lighter, too but still lacks water resistance. In addition, buyers can purchase the new Kindle in Black or Denim along with new fabric covers in Black, Rose, Denim and Dark Emerald.

Amazon has made some key changes to the 11th Generation Kindle. The glare-free display is still six inches in size and has a built-in adjustable light. However, it is now significantly sharper thanks to a bumped-up resolution to 300 PPI. This is the same display available on the new generation Kindle Kids too. The new e-readers also have the X-Ray feature that provides users with important details about places or people mentioned in a book. A similar feature is available when watching a show or movie on Prime Video. However, it shows the actors currently on the screen.

Another upgrade the new Kindles get is more storage. Both models now come with 16GB of storage space, a 100 percent increase from the previous generation. In addition to this is free cloud storage for all Amazon content. Furthermore, the battery capacity appears to have gotten bigger, too, as Amazon says the Kindle will now last up to six weeks on a single charge compared to the four weeks of the 10th gen model. There is Bluetooth (for Audible) and dual-band Wi-Fi support. The best part of the upgrades is that the new e-readers now have a USB-C port for charging. This is in line with the 2022 Fire 7 tablets, which also have USB-C ports.

Charging is faster now too. When plugged into a computer, it will take four hours to charge fully, but that time can be cut by half when connected to a 9W USB power adapter. Unfortunately, only a USB-C cable is included in the box, so buyers must provide their charger. The 11th Gen Kindle will sell for $99, a $10 increase compared to the previous generation. For $20 more, Amazon will remove the lock screen ads. On the other hand, the Kindle Kids starts at $119. It is available in only black and has its own kid-friendly covers. It also comes with a two-year warranty and one year of Amazon Kids+. Both Kindles are already available for pre-order and will be available on Oct. 2. They will ship in 100 percent recyclable packaging in the U.S.
