The trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 spoiled the death of Gwen Stacy for those familiar with her arc in Marvel Comics. Before Peter Parker joined the MCU with Tom Holland in the role, the character was played by Andrew Garfield. The Amazing Spider-Man was directed by Marc Webb and released in 2012 to widespread success, garnering public interest in a sequel. Emma Stone reprised her role as Peter's love interest, Gwen, for the 2014 sequel, but the early footage from the trailers insinuated that the character's future was bleak.

Gwen Stacy was a memorable supporting character during Spider-Man's run in Marvel Comics. The character, portrayed as a romantic interest for Peter, made her comic debut in 1965 with The Amazing Spider-Man #31. Gwen was an eager and intelligent college classmate of Peter's during her initial arc. The character was first played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 went deeper into mirroring her doomed comic book fate from the '70s.

Peter and Gwen were an official couple at the start of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Gwen later ended the relationship, but remained a key ally to her crime-fighting ex-beau. Not only did Peter face Electro and Rhino in the sequel, but he was forced to battle Harry Osbourne (Dane DeHaan) — the grief-stricken friend had assumed the role of Green Goblin with sights set on Spider-Man and taking down the city in the process. Throughout the trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Gwen can be seen wearing a purple dress, a long light green coat, and black boots. Comic book readers will recognize this as Gwen's "death outfit" worn in The Amazing Spider-Man #121–122, in the arc titled "The Night Gwen Stacy Died." But that wasn't the only detail in the trailers that hinted at her death.

Scenes From The Trailers Mirrored Images From "The Night Gwen Stacy Died"

The Amazing Spider-Man comic movie

During the comic book arc featuring the tragic death of Gwen Stacy, the Green Goblin abducted her and brought her atop the George Washington Bridge. He threw her off the tower, causing Spider-Man to shoot his web in an effort to catch her. Spider-Man managed to stop her fall but the whiplash from the sudden force ended up killing her. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailers showed multiple scenes of Gwen falling at a high rate of speed, albeit at a clock tower, not a bridge. There was a scene, however that featured Spider-Man bending down and shooting his web in the same manner when the character tried to catch Gwen from the bridge.

The trailers did indeed spoil Gwen's death in the movie for many fans, since she ended up being killed from Spider-Man's attempt at saving her. The film also included a clever Easter egg to the comic featuring Gwen's death by focusing on the clocker tower, revealing the clock stopped at 1:21, a nod to the issue from 1973. It makes sense why so many moviegoers are hesitant to watch trailers these days since studios don't seem concerned about revealing too much. In the case with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it might have been best to go with the "less is more" option, especially when it came to Gwen's presence in the trailer footage.
