Spider-Men Assemble! It’s hard to believe, but there was once a time when the name Spider-Man didn’t bring to mind blockbuster movies or a notorious Broadway musical. America’s favorite wall-crawler turns fifty this August (just after the release of Sony's franchise reboot The Amazing Spider-Man), but save for a short-lived TV show in the late 70s, live action Spidey is a relatively new concept.

Fast forward to 2002 and Spidey finally joined the ranks of Superman and Batman, headlining a movie of his own directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire. The wild success of the film spawned two sequels in 2004 and 2007 and, for better or for worse, led to the aforementioned musical, Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark.

But all was not well in fanboyland. They were shocked when Sony ditched its plans for a fourth Raimi outing and opted to start over in 2012. Many, like myself, felt it was too soon. The body of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man was still warm and casting had already begun to find the next young man to don the red and blue spandex. And now here we are, a week away from a brand new, big screen, web-slinging, CGI-fest and, face it… we’re Spidey-spoiled. As it turns out, there are plenty of reasons to excited for The Amazing Spider-Man. Oh, to be a ten-year-old fanboy in the new millennium.

I don’t know about you, but the fanMAN in me requires closure in situations like this. Unlike the filmic exorcism that Christopher Nolan had to perform to revive the Batman franchise, I still had fond memories of Spider-Man movies. So I did the only thing that made sense to me. I combined the epic bridge battle from Raimi’s first Spider-Man film against Willem Dafoe’s pitch-perfect Green Goblin with the bridge battle from the trailers for the new movie. In the process, the new Spider-Man saves his predecessor and embarks on his own adventures. The torch, or in this case, the web, is passed.

It’s all about closure. Saying goodbye to one radioactive spider bite victim and welcoming a new one to the fold. And I’m willing to bet that by the time I’m a fanGranfather, I’ll have seen many more incarnations of my favorite Marvel superhero.
