Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #66
In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Amazing Spider-Man, the mystery of Peter Parker's darkest enemy just got even stranger. While the villain Kindred has been tormenting Spider-Man for the better part of two years, the demon was recently captured by the Kingpin and Norman Osborn. However, Kindred's origins have yet to be fully revealed, despite his identity appearing to be that of Harry Osborn, Peter Parker's best friend and a former Green Goblin. However, the real questions regarding Kindred are how and why as opposed to who he is, as this new issue further confirms.
In previous issues of The Amazing Spider-Man from writer Nick Spencer, Kindred put Spider-Man through a brutal gauntlet of torture, killing him multiple times in a variety of different ways, only to resurrect him with his dark powers to kill him yet again. He also threatened his Spider-Allies, capturing them as well to force Spider-Man to admit a great sin he couldn't remember making. This is because it's been confirmed that while Kindred is Harry Osborn, he's a Harry from before Spider-Man made his deal with Mephisto during the events of One More Day. Prior to this deal that changed and retconned much of Spider-Man's reality and life (which Mephisto cleared from Peter's memory) Harry had been dead, but came back to life once said retcon went into effect.
Now, it seems as though this dead Harry has come back as Kindred, and he's out for revenge against Spider-Man as well as his father Norman Osborn. However, Norman was recently reformed, which meant he was determined to make up for all the terrible things he had done to his son. This brings things to Amazing Spider-Man #66 from writer Nick Spencer and artist Mark Bagley, which sees Norman freeing his "son." This turned out to be the wrong choice, however, as he was quickly attacked by Kindred. Meanwhile, Carlie Cooper is revealed to have been imprisoned in an unknown location due to a discovery she made about Kindred's origins, and her cellmate is pretty surprising.
Strangely enough, Harry Osborn is in the cell with Carlie, despite Kindred having just been freed and set loose by Norman. This can only mean that while Kindred is the pre-One More Day Harry, the Harry with Carlie is the post-One More Day version that had been living his life since the controversial storyline. Most likely, whenever and however Kindred made it out of Hell, he captured the new Harry in order to take his place while he began his plans for revenge. That means that this current reality's Harry has probably been held prisoner for a long time.
In any case, the mystery of Kindred is only getting stranger and weirder as it continues to unfold. If anyone has a clue as to what's really going on besides Kindred, it's Mephisto, the Lord of Hell himself. Thankfully, Doctor Strange has begun to have his suspicions about Mephisto having somehow tampered with Spider-Man's soul, so hopefully the full mystery will be solved in future issues of Amazing Spider-Man soon.
