After a two-year hiatus, the season 32 return of The Amazing Race has been a bit of a mixed bag. The long-absent Yield came back into the game, a new game element, the City Sprint, was introduced, and a powerful alliance emerged amongst five teams. The Mine Five alliance included The Boyfriends, Hung and Chee, The Beard Bros, Eswar and Aparna, and Gary and DeAngelo, and was seriously unstoppable. They dominated leg after leg. But as the legs went on and non-alliance teams were eliminated, it became all too evident that the Mine Five were going to be forced to turn on each other soon. As shown on the show, Gary and DeAngelo ranked lowest on the totem pole. The other four teams felt that the former football players were using the alliance to their benefit, but never gave back to it. The whispers of annoyance over this spread like a virus and lead to them becoming the most expendable team in the alliance. The other four teams withheld valuable information and were exceedingly vague. Gary and DeAngelo didn’t seem to pick up on the turning tide and even managed to U-Turn Eswar and Aparna and stay in the game.

But in the final leg, the tide was impossible to ignore. Phil met the teams in the city of Manila with big news: the final four would complete a new piece of game play, The City Sprint. Without any Roadblocks or Detours, Phil very directly warned the teams that using alliances during this nonstop, treasure-hunt style race day would not be beneficial. Did that stop the alliance loving teams? Nope. It did not. When all four final teams met at the final challenge of the day, they quickly realized it was a very difficult one. Tasked with identifying four songs they heard in various challenges on their journey around the world and placing them in race order by country, the Beard Bros, Boyfriends, and Hung and Chee secretly decided to work together and intentionally left Gary and DeAngelo out. When the Beard Bros finally got the right answer, they circled back and gave the answer to Hung and Chee before going to meet Phil at the mat. Watching them give another team the answer was a sting of a moment for Gary and DeAngelo. A sting because Gary and DeAngelo had had a secret alliance with the Beard Bros all along.

Despite the producers never showing it, Gary and DeAngelo had made a side alliance with the Beard Bros. In an alliance of athletes, Gary and DeAngelo felt confident that “they would have our back and keep their word.” To make matters worse, apparently the Beard Bros approached Gary and DeAngelo at that final challenge in Manila and whispered that they should give each other the answers if they got it. Of course, this moment between the athletes alliance wasn’t aired. When the Beard Bros gave the answer to Hung and Chee, the sting was much worse than anyone knew.

In a recent interview with Gold Derby, DeAngelo says he’s “still salty” over how everything went down on The Amazing Race. And that while he no longer regrets doing the show, "[he] won’t do it again because it’s not [his] cup of tea. It’s hard and it wasn’t what [he] expected.” Gary was quick to chime in and insist that DeAngelo did have fun.

As Gary puts it, the hard part for DeAngelo were the Pit Stops. He didn’t like being in the hotel looking at the city instead of going out and experiencing the city. While DeAngelo does admit that he made good friends amongst his cast members, he said he’s not rooting for any of the final three teams. To him they’re not interesting or fun to watch. As for Gary, he’s rooting for Hung and Chee. Hung and Chee wound up placing second, while the Beard Bros. came in third and Will and James won. At the end, Will proposed to James and he said yes.
