When Will It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Return?

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 13 was confirmed back in 2016, but we're still waiting - when will FXX's extremely NSFW show return?

For twelve seasons and 134 episodes, It's Always Sunny has provided a steady stream of laughs stemming from "The Gang" and their equally hilarious and inappropriate antics. One of the first mainstream basic cable comedy hits on the then-unproven FX network, the show has since become the flagship series of the spin-off network, FXX.

In 2016, before airing its twelfth season, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was renewed for Seasons 13 and 14. The twelfth season finale, the latest episode to be aired, was broadcast on March 8, 2017. It's been over a year, yet the show has yet to return for its promised batch of new episodes. Here are the reasons why.

Why It's Always Sunny Season 13 Is Taking Longer

The simple answer is that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is on hiatus; production on the upcoming Season 13 was delayed because everybody is busy working on other projects.

Charlie Day is a movie star now, with movies like Horrible Bosses, Pacific Rim, and Fist Fight under his belt. He recently co-starred in Pacific Rim Uprising and is set to appear in the upcoming action movie, Hotel Artemis. Rob McElhenney is currently tackling the seemingly impossible prospect of adapting the video game sensation Minecraft into a feature film. Meanwhile, Danny DeVito is starring a Broadway play, The Price, alongside Mark Ruffalo. Kaitlin Olson is starring in another television series, The Mick, on Fox. Since Fox and FXX are sister networks, it can be assumed that shooting schedules can be designed to avoid overlapping with each other.

Things get more interesting when it comes to the final member of The Gang, Glenn Howerton.

Will Dennis Return?

The season 12 finale focused on the shocking revelation that Dennis had a secret family in the suburbs, and ended with him choosing to live with them and abandoning The Gang at the bar (and also with The Gang blowing up a car with a rocket launcher, but that's not important right now).

This surprise ending may or may not have been intended to be a cliffhanger, but with the real life circumstances surrounding actor Glenn Howerton, it sure feels like one. Howerton starred alongside Patton Oswalt in A.P. Bio, an NBC pilot which was picked up to series and has since been renewed for a second season. It's unclear if Howerton has room in his schedule for both Always Sunny and A.P. Bio, and the cast remains unsure if Dennis will be a part of Season 13, though it's also important to note that Howerton hasn't officially left the series.

One way or another, with or without Dennis, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will return in the near future. Charlie Day has confirmed that the new season is currently being written, so things should be moving soon. The question is when. It was originally thought Season 13 would premiere in late-2018, but the lack of movement since suggests otherwise. Given how It's Always Sunny has started in January for the past three years (after shifting from Fall), January 2019 wouldn't be too out-there.

All will be revealed in due time. It's just a matter of waiting for FXX to announce the return date for Always Sunny, and to confirm whether or not Glenn Howerton will remain part of the cast, be relegated to guest star status, or be absent entirely. There's always hope that The Gang stays together forever and continues making horrible decisions until the end of time.
