Netflix’s neo-noir cyberpunk TV series Altered Carbon won millions of fans worldwide and went on to achieve an IMDB rating of 8.1! The show is based upon the book series of the same name by renowned author Richard Morgan.

The second season portrayed Takeshi Kovacs, the protagonist of the series, dying to save his girlfriend and the Harlan’s World. However, just when fans thought they would never be able to see their favorite character again, Poe found a strange backup in his data. If it is Kovacs, should he be resleeved, or should he stay dead?

Stay Dead: His Search Has Ended

Takeshi Kovacs sacrificed himself to save the love of his life, Quell, from the wrath of the Angel Fire. The night before this ultimate confrontation happened with the last Elder, Kovacs tried his best to convince Quell to give them another chance to start a family. He asked her to spend time with him and basically proposed to her, but she turned him down. With that being said, everyone he loved is gone, and there is honestly no reason for him to come back again.

Should Be Resleeved: What If The Backup Is Older?

In the last scenes of the final episode of the Altered Carbon season two, Poe discovers that he has a backup of a stack in his data. It is never confirmed that it is the original Takeshi Kovacs, but there are subtle hints. So, if the backup is indeed the real Kovacs, it has to be older than his death, and hence, his conversation with Quell.

If that’s true, perhaps there is still hope for Kovacs, as he would not know that Quell had turned him down and that he had died such a horrible death. He can pursue her again!

Stay Dead: Dynamics With Poe

The friendship of tough Kovacs and loyal Poe have been the most favorite part of the show for long. But, towards the middle of the second season, these dynamics took a turn for worse. Their relationship changed drastically, and it looked like Poe was always at the receiving end of either taunt or verbal spat. Mackie’s Kovacs even fired Poe and replaced him with Miss Dig. We are sure no fan would like to see this anymore. It’s better if this Kovacs stays dead and does not bother our beloved Poe anymore.

Should Be Resleeved: Another Chance

Poe and Takeshi Kovacs did not seem to have the same relationship in the second season. Poe’s witty remarks, Kovacs’ subtle acts of care and affection towards him, and their friendship were the X factor of the very first season of Altered Carbon.

The second season managed to destroy that effortless chemistry somehow. It always looked like either Poe was trying too hard to build chemistry, or there was none at all! Original Kovacs should be resleeved, and their relationship should be focused on this time in order to recreate the magic of the first season.

Stay Dead: Kovacs Prime

Altered Carbon Season 2 Takeshi Kovacs Prime

The Elders were the alien inhabitants of the Harlan’s World who were not explored much in the second season in spite of the fact that the season was focused on them, for most of the part. If the original Kovacs stays dead and Kovacs Prime is focused on, instead, it would be quite interesting to watch him investigate the Elders and if any of them are still alive. Kovacs Prime might fall for Quell, too, and that would be something new to explore.

Should Be Resleeved: The Last Envoy

Altered Carbon Season 2 - Will Yun Lee as Takeshi Kovacs Prime

Dead Kovacs was the last envoy and had a ton of extreme training and envoy experience over Kovacs Prime.

With the death of the original Takeshi Kovacs, all the envoys are dead, except Quellcrist Falconer. To be honest, a bigger chunk of the awesome fight sequences have come from this version of Kovacs, and he should be resleeved, for sure, if just to show his killer moves and arrogant, moody body language!

Stay Dead: Lifecycle

Altered Carbon Takeshi Kovacs Different Actors

In any story or a show, a character has a lifecycle. It starts off with the character being born, or in his childhood, slowly coming to the spotlight, his story arc blooming, and, finally, the conclusion in the form of their death or exit.

The older Takeshi Kovacs has lived through centuries, has had gazillion adventures, found his girlfriend, and met an ultimate end. A spectacular exit from the storyline! This Kovacs has completed his lifecycle, so he should now stay dead and enjoy the bliss!

Should Be Resleeved: Closure To The Love Story

Three people in an elevator in Altered Carbon

Takeshi Kovacs is a tough man hardened by the domestic abuse of his father, his first murder, and one too many atrocities of life. He fell in love with Quellcrist at first sight. For the first time in his life, he felt emotions and longing for someone. He has waited for Quell for centuries at this point.

Kovacs does not deserve being turned down by his only love after everything he has gone through, especially when she loves him, too. He must be resleeved and given a second chance to get some closure, or maybe win Quell back!

Stay Dead: It Has Become Quite Repetitive

It is almost boring how every season, Kovacs is slacking off or doing nothing, and then an extremely wealthy Meth hires him to do his bidding! In the first season, Takeshi Kovacs was sleeping on ice as a punishment, when Laurens Bancroft hired him to investigate his murder. Along with this job, he also started searching for Quellcrist, and the season ended on that note.

The second season again opened with him singing anonymously in a bar in an attempt to find Quell when Horace Axley hired him for his security team. It would be refreshing if the next season keeps him dead and explores something new with the other characters.

Should Be Resleeved: An Excuse To Bring Kinnaman Back

No brownie points for guessing Joel Kinnaman is the most authentic Takeshi Kovacs so far, and the dead Kovacs should for sure be resleeved if only to bring Kinnaman back.

There have been a ton of pages on Reddit and Tumblr ranting about how replacing Joel Kinnaman was the worst decision by the showrunners, second to messing up with the storyline and original tone of the show in the second season. The story of the third season can be started off several centuries later when Ryker is dead and Kovacs is wearing his sleeve! That would be a dream come true for many!
