Warning: contains major spoilers for Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary 100-page Super Spectacular #1!

DC fans have predominantly preferred Superman dating Lois Lane to Wonder Woman, but his main squeeze nearly ruined her chances with him. In Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary 100-page Super Spectacular #1, the Man of Steel and Goddess of Truth were set up by the Daily Planet's ace reporter - without her knowing their super identities. And if she had known what she was doing, she likely wouldn't have let it happen.

Wonder Woman and Superman have dated on and off in various series, but there always seems to be a reason for them not staying together, even though they would make the ultimate power couple. However, a new story in Diana's 80th-anniversary special reveals another reason why they just don't belong together. And it does so while also revisiting one of Wonder Woman's strangest eras - her Mod phase.

The story "Dated" comes from the creative team of Tom King, Evan "Doc" Shaner, and Clayton Cowles. It features Clark Kent being set up with Diana by Lois. The two are very surprised to find out who their date is, particularly since Wonder Woman had previously given up her powers and left the Justice League. Nonetheless, they still go through with the date. Clark plans to take Diana to an opera, but she changes things up and takes him to a dance club instead. The date goes smoothly enough, but, as usual, things just don't work out for these two DC heroes. They may have similar ways of thinking, but they aren't a proper match. However, if they were, Lois certainly wouldn't be happy about it. She hasn't managed to discern that Clark and Superman are the same person. If she knew the truth about what she had done, she would certainly be shocked and less eager to pair the two up.

Luckily for Lois, Superman and Wonder Woman aren't a couple that can make it work. They are both heroes and they would both be willing to sacrifice themselves to save the world, but when it comes to dating, they just don't seem to click. Superman is too much of a cop in certain regards. He's stiff, law-abiding, and is basically a boy scout in many ways. Wonder Woman is a free spirit who goes wherever she's needed at any time, while Superman has a particular role and home that he feels obligated to.

By the end of "Dated," Clark is once more trying to be with Lois, to no avail. His efforts are crushed as she still jut has eyes for Superman. Clark and Diana just aren't a match. If Lois had succeeded in setting them up, the ace reporter would have been very broken-hearted about putting Superman right into Wonder Woman's embrace over her own.
