Warning: This post contains spoilers for Loki episode 5.

Loki writer Michael Waldron plays coy on the subject of whether Alligator Loki is truly a version of the God of Mischief. Even before the Disney+ series began, it was confirmed it would explore alternate versions of Loki (Tom Hiddleston). The trailers had the MCU's version of the character be called a "Variant," indicating there were other iterations of him out there. One of them, Sophia Di Martino's Sylvie, has even proved to be a major character throughout Loki's run. And, as the post-credits scene for Loki episode 4 revealed, there are plenty more Loki Variants out there.

Wednesday's Loki episode 5, "Journey Into Mystery," featured the biggest number of Lokis yet, from Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant) to Kid Loki (Jack Veal). Fans also finally got to see the President Loki who appeared in the show's trailers. However, if there was one Variant in particular who stole the show it just might be Alligator Loki. The scaly creature became the subject of much fascination and jokes after being revealed last week, and episode 5 doesn't do much to dispel the mystery around him. It's left one big question: Is Alligator Loki truly a Loki?

Series writer Waldron isn't saying one way or the other. In an interview with Marvel.com released after the episode dropped, Waldron admitted he himself has the answer to whether the alligator is actually a Loki Variant, but he won't be saying anything. "I know, but I want people to wonder," he said. "I want that to be the next great Marvel debate. Is Alligator Loki really a Loki or not?" Elsewhere, Waldron had this to say about including Alligator Loki:

“It's so stupid, but it also makes total sense. You almost have to take it seriously, like maybe he is [a Loki]? Why shouldn't there be an alligator version of Loki? For all we know, that's an alligator universe or whatever. It's just the sort of irreverent thing that, in this show, we play straight and make the audience take it seriously.”

Loki episode 5 offers evidence for both arguments. On one hand, Classic Loki points out that the alligator is green, and therefore must be one of them. On the other, Mobius (Owen Wilson) entertains the idea that the alligator is lying. However, he then acknowledges that would make it more likely the alligator is a Loki. Clearly, it's up to the audience to decide the truth behind Alligator Loki's identity.

It's worth mentioning that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse features a Spider-Pig, so truly anything is possible within the Marvel universe. Seeing as Alligator Loki put up an excellent fight against President Loki, it might be fair to deem him, at the very least, an honorary God of Mischief. He's green, he isn't afraid to resort to some dirty tactics, and he's got the horns to boot. Based on those traits alone, he is very Loki-like. With the MCU Loki and Sylvie headed off to face the creator of the TVA, there's a chance the fan favorite alligator won't be seen again. If that's the case, at least he got his time to shine.
