This article contains SPOILERS for All of Us Are Dead

Both played by Lee Yoo-Mi, Squid Game’s Ji-yeong, and All of Us Are Dead’s Lee Na-yeon help establish a clever link between the two shows. Two of Netflix's newest hists, Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead have dominated social media thanks to their entertaining high-stakes premises. While the similarities end there, the productions share a parallel casting that could make for an interesting watch of both shows.

Released in September 2021, Squid Game climbed to the top of streaming charts with the story of the survival game that brought together people in need of money or redemption for a chance of winning a billionaire prize. Throughout its first season, Squid Game surprised audiences by placing its characters in increasingly dangerous challenges. The newly-released All of Us Are Dead is also about survival but in a completely different setting. After a troubled scientist creates a new virus, the students of a local school have to fight zombies and humans to stay alive. Each in its way, both shows get viewers to choose favorite characters to root for until the very end.

Those who have watched both Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead might have spotted that Ji-yeong and Lee Na-yeon are played by the same actress, Lee Yoo-Mi. The similarity between the characters does not go beyond that, as Player 240 and the zombie apocalypse survivor could not be more different. Amidst all the selfishness and survival instinct displayed by many of the Squid Game characters, Ji-yeong came out as a good, trustable person who did not put her own interests above others. Lee Na-yeon, on the other hand, is one of the more disliked characters in All of Us Are Dead due to her insensitivity and little appreciation for the lives of her classmates. While Ji-yeong sacrificed herself to save another player, Lee Na-yeon orchestrated the death of a comrade.

The best part of that casting trick is that no matter which of shows one decides to watch first, they will have their expectations subverted upon meeting Lee Yoo-Mi's other character. For those who had previously watched Squid Game, seeing the actress play an unapologetic character in All of Us Are Dead will be a shocking experience. For those who met Lee Na-yeon first, watching Lee Yoo-Mi play a selfless, kind-hearted person will be a pleasant surprise.

Whether or not it was an intentional choice, Lee Yoo-Mi's casting in All of Us Are Dead as a completely different character from the one the actress played in Squid Game works both on a meta-level and in terms of the story. The parallel between the Player 240 and Lee Na-yeon makes it a surprising watch and adds to the overall experience of watching both series. More than anything, the difference between the two characters is a testimony to how talented Lee Yoo-Mi is.
