The CW has greenlit a spinoff of its sports drama All American with Geffri Maya’s character Simone Hicks as the lead. All American, which originally premiered in 2018, has purportedly been considering a new series offshoot for a while. It seems that they have finally taken the plunge with the character Simone.

Partly inspired by the life of professional football linebacker Spencer Paysinger, All American follows the fictional protagonist Spencer James, played by Daniel Ezra, as he navigates the politics of high school sports in Los Angeles. While a student at South Crenshaw High, he is spotted by Beverly Hills High coach Billy Baker, a former NFL player, who encourages him to transfer to his school. Although ostensibly a show about football, it also covers the highs and lows of adolescence, exploring deeper subjects surrounding family, love, and social issues. As a popular teen drama on the CW, it likewise tackles a number of dramatic story arcs and relationships, introducing characters and plotlines at breakneck speed.

According to TVLine, a spinoff pilot about aspiring tennis professional Simone’s transition to college life at an HBCU will air as an All American episode during its current third season. The spinoff, titled All American: Homecoming, will center on Simone and a gifted baseball player from Chicago as they enter their first year at a prestigious historically Black university. At the moment, the CW has not yet confirmed when this backdoor pilot will air.

The character Simone originally joined the main cast of All American in season two. Upon arrival, a romance slowly ensued between Simone and Jordan Baker, the son of the school’s football coach. The biggest point of contention between the two of them occurred when she falsely led him to believe that he was the father of her baby, which ultimately turned out to be untrue.

It is certainly an exciting development for Simone, whose character now has the chance to expand beyond the perimeters of Los Angeles and seek out her ambitious goal to play tennis professionally. At the same time, it does raise questions about how her romance with Jordan will unfold on All American. Of course, television high school romances are notorious for their wildly unpredictable ups and downs and, as always, there is something to be said for taking the leap into the unknown to attain your dreams.
