GLOW star Alison Brie has shared a new image from the set of the series, teasing the start of filming for season 2. Over the past few years, Netflix has begun ramping up its production of original content considerably. 2017 saw a slew of new films and TV series arrive, position the streaming giant as the go-to source for prestige entertainment. Out of the new crop of shows that arrived this year, however, few could hold a candle to GLOW.
Created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, and produced by Jenji Kohan, the mind behind perennial Netflix favorite Orange is the New Black, the first season of GLOW used the real-life ’80s wrestling league as inspiration for the series. With Brie jumping from affable roles in Community and Mad Men to the selfish and often intolerable Ruth Wilder in GLOW, the show proved it wasn’t pulling any punches. Whether sending up wrestling tropes or spotlighting topics like abortion with aplomb, the series showed a knack for blending humor and tough subjects with plenty of panache. Unsurprisingly, the critical hit was quickly given a second season earlier this year. Now, it looks like production has begun.
Brie posted an image of herself on the set of GLOW season 2 alongside Betty Gilpin. Not only does it tease the return of the series and its two stars, but the image means production has begun on season 2 and more information should follow shortly.
While Brie is in her normal clothes, she’s all made up in the style of her character Zoya the Destroyer. Gilpin, meanwhile, is in full-blown Liberty Belle mode. The animosity and chemistry between Gilpin and Brie in season 1 was a major selling point for the series. Incidentally, it also helped make the wrestling show within the show a reality. As Wilder and Gilpin’s character Debbie Eagan clashed over personal issues and a dissolving friendship, their alter-egos were born with a built-in hatred of each other.
Season 1 ended with the first broadcast of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling within the show, but it’s not clear how big of a hit the series was. The real GLOW didn’t last long, and it’s not hard to imagine the series avoiding a happier season 2. Likely, the series will be on the air but the threat of being canceled will hang over everyone’s heads. Naturally, that will inspire plenty of drama both in and out of the ring. And if season 1 is any indication, that will be good news for both versions of GLOW.
GLOW season 2 will air sometime in 2018 on Netflix.
