Oscar-nominee James Franco has officially been cast as the notorious Cuban leader Fidel Castro in the upcoming film Alina of Cuba. Based on the real-life story, Alina of Cuba will follow Castro’s illegitimate daughter, Alina Fernandez, along her powerful journey from Cuban exile to social advocate as one of Castro’s biggest outspoken critics. It was previously announced that Ana Villafañe would be taking on the role of Castro’s daughter, Fernandez, with no word on who would be portraying the famed Cuban leader, until now.
It has now been announced that two-time Golden Globe-winner James Franco will be taking on the role of Fidel Castro in the upcoming film Alina of Cuba, via Deadline. It was also confirmed that Mía Maestro would be portraying Natalia “Naty” Revuelta, the Cuban-born woman with whom Castro engages in a passionate love affair, resulting in the birth of their daughter, Fernandez. Production for the upcoming historical film will begin in and around Cartagena and Bogota on August 15.
Alina of Cuba also stars Alanna de la Rosa, Maria Cecilia Botero, Harding Junior, Sian Chiong, and Rafael Ernesto Hernandez. The historical drama screenplay was co-written by Jose Rivera and Nilo Cruz, and will offer audiences a chance to see Franco playing a real person, as he previously did with his Golden Globe-winning performance in 2017’s The Disaster Artist. There is currently no known release date for Alina of Cuba.
