Rumor Patrol: Will the Alien Appear in Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus'?

Ridley Scott's Alien prequel Prometheus

Despite Ridley Scott's Prometheus originally being conceived as a two-part prequel to his original Alien movie, it's become difficult to determine whether or not the upcoming film will have ties to the iconic franchise.

Back in January, it was announced that Prometheus would be eschewing the prequel label and that the project had instead transformed into an original sci-fi story with little or no connection to established continuity. A few weeks later, the recently cast Michael Fassbender claimed that, while the film will definitely be very different from previous Alien installments, it's "absolutely" a part of that series.

Then, just two days ago, we learned that the Space Jockey could still appear in the film. At this point, Prometheus has been referred to as a prequel, a spin-off, and a completely separate story - whose connection to the Alien series will be somewhat ambiguous. So which is it?

Well if a recent report from Bleeding Cool is to be believed, then we've probably just received the most compelling piece of evidence that Prometheus will feature more than just a few loose connections to Alien. One of their sources claims that the Alien xenomorphs will appear in the film - but that they're going to look a little different than you remember them:

"Remember how the alien took on canine qualities after gestating in a dog? You may even suppose that the first film’s alien was so recognisably humanoid because it had grown in a human. The same applies here: generation by generation, the creature mutates. As Prometheus begins, the xenomorph is not too recognisable. Sure, it has that alien DNA that Scott and Fassbender teasingly referred to, but it’s missing… well, it’s missing human DNA. Or dog DNA.

All you have to do is imagine how it might look if it were to mix DNA with another alien species… and I think we’re starting to work it all out."

The design of the Alien received minor alterations over the course of the entire series, but it was Alien 3 that was largely responsible for introducing the idea that different hosts resulted in different characteristics for the creature. Having grown inside of a dog (or an Ox depending on which version you watch), the film's Alien was a quadruped with double jointed legs.

I always thought that was a really interesting concept and it's somewhat disappointing that the only other exploration of that idea we've seen on film is the Predalien from the Alien Vs. Predator series. Regardless of how different the xenomorphs in Prometheus may ultimately look, at least we know they're in capable hands - since H.R. Giger is helping design the film's various creatures.

Bleeding Cool also confirms that part of Prometheus will take place on "a planet that has been terraformed to create the perfect environment in which a particular bioweapon would prosper." Previous Alien movies have established that there's always been a great deal of interest in turning the xenomorphs into weapons - so take from that what you will.

The source also indicates that while Prometheus is the working title, it could very well change before the film's release. It's starting to become more and more clear how this is (and isn't) a prequel at the same time. While it might take place before the events of the first Alien film, it doesn't sound like Prometheus will require any knowledge of that franchise - and could work just as well as a stand alone story.

Ridley Scott's original Alien will always be my favorite of the entire series and I couldn't be more excited about seeing him tackle another tale set in this universe. Breaking free from the conventions of the series, while retaining its iconography, seems like a wise decision and I can't wait to see how this one develops.

Prometheus also stars Charlize Theron & Noomi Rapace and is scheduled to hit theaters on June 8, 2012.
