The search is on for the female lead in Ridley Scott’s two Alien prequels, a role which is essentially the new Ripley. We recently reported that Clash of the Titans star Gemma Arterton had met with Scott about starring in the lead role, however that rumor was swiftly debunked.
Deadline now reports that Scott has had several meetings with various different actresses, including the likes of Carey Mulligan (last seen in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) and Abby Cornish (star of Scott’s A Good Year). But the name that’s been thrown around a lot is the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace.
Rapace reportedly met with Scott before she signed on to play the female lead in Sherlock Holmes 2 opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law (this meeting was likely part of a series of meetings Rapace had with several big Hollywood names). Rapace apparently left a very strong impression and by the looks of things if anyone is the frontrunner for the Alien role, it’s her.
Of course that’s just pure speculation at this point since – much like David Fincher’s Girl With the Dragon Tattoo remake and Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi film Gravity – this is a much sought after female role. However, Rapace clearly has the talent and the presence to pull off a role of this type (just look at her performance in the Millennium Trilogy films) and she’s making a big impression in Hollywood right now, so it’d be pretty smart for Scott to snag her for Alien before she starts popping up in other roles.
No concrete decisions have been made by Scott as meetings are still ongoing at this point. But whether it’s Rapace or any of the other aforementioned actresses that ends up in the lead role of these Alien films, it’ll be interesting to see how Scott ties everything in to what we already know from the established Alien story, while still keeping the prequels as proper standalone movies in their own right.
While we wait to hear if Rapace is the chosen one, you can catch her in the concluding part of the Millennium Trilogy films when The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest hits theaters on October 29th, 2010 (check out the trailer if you missed it).
