The cast of Alice in Borderland Season 2 discusses the end of filming the new season of the Netflix sci-fi action-thriller. Alice in Borderland season 1 was released on Netflix in late December 2020 and received positive reviews from critics, with many citing the visuals, editing, and action as strengths. Season 2 is set to be released in December 2022 and will see the return of all the surviving cast members.
Based on the manga of the same name, Alice in Borderland follows Ryohei Arisu, a game-obsessed man who becomes trapped in an abandoned Tokyo where he, and an ensemble of other players, must compete in a series of deadly games, success in which helps them survive longer. Alice in Borderland has been compared to the hit series Squid Game since both feature an ensemble trying to survive a deadly game run by unknown parties. However, despite coming out first, Alice in Borderland was only streamed in 18 million households during its first month of release, compared to Squid Game's 142 million.
A new video shared by netflixgolden on Twitter shows the cast talking about what it was like to film Alice in Borderland Season 2. Kento Yamazaki, Ryohei on the show, discusses the "large-scale" scenes they filmed every day before describing the world of the show as "bigger than ever." Tao Tsuchiya, who plays Usagi, described each shot as having "big set pieces, like explosions." Chishiya actor Nijirō Murakami expresses gratitude for having the season 1 cast reassembled for season 2 filming, saying, "as soon as we saw each other, we clicked right away." The rest of the cast, including Ayaka Miyoshi, Dori Sakurada, Aya Asahina, Sho Aoyagi, and Riisa Naka, discuss how well received the first season was and how they hope to capitalize on the success of those first eight episodes. After the success of season 1, Alice In Borderland viewers have had fun theorizing where the show could go in season 2. There's a lot that could happen to expand the premise and worldbuilding of the series. The first season heavily featured the famous Shibuya crossing in its locations, suggesting that the show could recreate other popular destinations of Tokyo for the series. Alice in Borderland Season 1 also covered the first half of the manga, so it's unknown if season 2 will cover the back half of the manga or just part of it.
It's always interesting to find what explodes in popularity and what doesn't; Alice in Borderland has a robust, passionate fanbase, but it simply wasn't the cultural touchstone that Squid Game was when it came out nine months later. Still, with the bold visual style and more confident storytelling, Alice in Borderland Season 2 could top its first season and impress those in its established fanbase. In the end, Alice in Borderland Season 2 will hopefully continue the kinetic storytelling and visual flair that made the first season a hit.
