Disney will reboot the family comedy Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day based on the 1972 children's book of the same name by Judith Viorst. The story revolves around Alexander's increasingly bad day that starts with gum in his hair and spirals from there. The original live-action adaptation was released in 2014 and starred Steve Carrell and Jennifer Garner, and Ed Oxenbould in the titular role. Reviews were mostly mixed, with critics commending the film as a solid piece of family entertainment.
According to Deadline, Disney+ is in the early stages of rebooting Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day in a version that will focus on a multigenerational Latinx family. Matt Lopez has been hired to write the script. Lopez is also working with Warner Bros. to write a reboot of Father of the Bride that will also be from a Latinx family's perspective.
It is unclear what other changes will be made to the plot. The 2014 movie included Alexander wishing for his family to understand his bad luck and misfortune better. The next day, he wakes up to discover that his parents and siblings are experiencing horrible days of their own. Supporting roles featured actors such as Dylan Minnette, Bella Thorne, Donald Glover, and Megan Mullally.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day joins a list of movies Disney+ intends to reboot or reimagine for a new generation of audiences. Other titles set to receive this treatment include Home Alone, Night at the Museum, and Cheaper By the Dozen. A release date has not been announced.
