Warning: contains preview images for Fantastic Four: Full Circle!

Superstar artist Alex Ross has shared incredible artwork for his forthcoming Fantastic Four graphic novel. The book, titled Fantastic Four: Full Circle, revisits a classic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby story and is the first long form work written and illustrated by Ross. The book, to be published by Abrams ComicArts as the first installment of the MarvelArts line, will be in stores August 2.

Alex Ross is one of the most distinctive illustrators in comics history. He broke into the comics mainstream with 1993’s Marvels, with writer Kurt Busiek. The combination of the book’s unabashedly nostalgic take on Marvel history, combined with Ross’ epic fully-painted visuals, made Marvels a smash hit. Ross would have similar success three years later at DC Comics, alongside writer Mark Waid, with the miniseries Kingdom Come. Since then, Ross’ work has graced numerous books as well as countless covers; Ross has also lent his talent to album covers and posters for the Academy Awards as well. Alex Ross’ style is one of a kind, combining a deep respect for the past while looking forward at the same time, and this is on full display in the preview pages for Fantastic Four: Full Circle.

These stunning pages were unveiled by Alex Ross on Twitter, along with a link to more information on the book on his website. Fantastic Four: Full Circle sees Ross put his own spin on a classic Stan Lee/Jack Kirby story, one that sees the quartet turn back an invasion from the Negative Zone. The pages, shared below, invoke the spirit of Lee and Kirby, showing the Fantastic Four traveling to the Negative Zone and beholding its wonders and terrors upon their arrival. The preview art has garnered more than 2,000 likes and acclaim from industry professionals such as Jim Zub.

Since his breakout hit Marvels, Alex Ross has worn his love for classic comics on his sleeve. Marvels was a loving look back at the history of the Marvel Universe, perfect for an artist such as Ross. Alex Ross’ amazing artwork also looks forward, and Kingdom Come, with its apocalyptic future, best shows this; like Marvels, it too is regarded as a classic. Judging from the preview pages, Fantastic Four: Full Circle will keep this tradition going. Ross is tackling a legendary story from an already storied history and injecting it with new life. The preview pages make it clear that Ross is not merely copying Jack Kirby, but instead respecting the King’s work by adding his own dynamic elements; taken together, it creates a work that, much like Ross’ art, honors the past while creating something new.

Alex Ross has unveiled a special first look at Fantastic Four: Full Circle, a new graphic novel that sees the artist honor one of comics’ greatest runs by bringing it his own special touch.
