Disney's Live-Action Aladdin TV Spot Reveals First Look At Will Smith's Blue Genie

Will Smith as Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine

Disney unveils a new Aladdin TV spot, revealing more footage - including Will Smith's blue Genie - from Guy Ritchie's upcoming live-action adaptation of the animated classic. Disney has found a great deal of success in recent years with their live-action retellings of stories from their animated classics collection. While Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent offered slightly different takes on the classic tales, The Jungle Book, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast stuck pretty close to the animated Disney movies. In 2019, Disney will release three more live-action adaptations, including Tim Burton's Dumbo, Ritchie's Aladdin and Jon Favreau's The Lion King.

In terms of Aladdin, the film hits theaters in late May, at the start of the summer blockbuster season. Disney debuted the first teaser trailer for Aladdin in October 2018, but hasn't revealed any more new footage - let alone a full trailer - since then. Images of Aladdin were released, and fans were divided over Smith's not-blue version of Genie, though the actor promised a blue version of the character will appear in the movie. Now, Disney reveals new footage from Aladdin during this year's Grammy Awards.

Disney premiered the Aladdin TV spot during the 61st Annual Grammy Awards on CBS before making it available online. The first trailer teased how close the movie will stay to the animated classic, while offering glimpses at the sweeping visuals. Now, watch the new Aladdin TV spot below and see a new photo from Disney of Smith's Genie.

In addition to Smith, Aladdin stars Mena Massoud as the titular street rat, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, Navid Negahban as Jasmine’s father the Sultan, Nasim Pedrad as Jasmine's friend Dalia and Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders. The film is directed by Ritchie from a script he wrote with John August.

The extended Aladdin TV spot offers a great deal more footage from the upcoming Disney movie, and reveals certain visual parallels between Ritchie's film and the animated classic - like Jasmine taking Aladdin's hand. Released in 1992 during the Disney Renaissance, Aladdin has become a beloved film for an entire generation of moviegoers. As such, there are plenty of folks who are hoping the upcoming live-action take will do justice to the original. One contentious aspecting of Ritchie's movie will no doubt be Smith's blue Genie, who perhaps doesn't look quite like some fans expected. Of course, the potential trouble of bringing a character like Genie to life in live-action is likely why the filmmakers chose to include Smith in a non-blue form for part of the movie (it's also why the stage adaptation of Aladdin doesn't feature any blue version of Genie).

As for whether this latest Aladdin TV spot will get fans more excited or more worried for the upcoming retelling, it may do both. It's clear Disney and Ritchie aren't skimping on the visual spectacle, but that may not translate into a stunning and compelling movie. Disney has found success with their live-action adaptations in the past, and fans may be about to rest assured they'll do so again with Aladdin. Either way, moviegoers will be able to check out Aladdin for themselves when it hits theaters in May.
