Apple periodically releases new firmware updates for its AirPods, and the AirPods Pro 2 are no exception. Regular software updates is one area where Apple is ahead of the competition. The company has a variety of operating systems for its products, including iOS for iPhones, iPadOS for iPads, macOS for Macs, and watchOS for Apple Watch. Apart from supporting its devices for several years via major releases, Apple also regularly rolls out minor updates to fix critical security flaws and quash bugs.

The AirPods Pro 2 were released in Sept. 2022, and are a follow-up to the original AirPods that were launched back in 2019. The new AirPods Pro bring several upgrades over their predecessor, including improved Active Noise Cancellation, personalized Spatial Audio, a new H2 chip, touch controls for volume adjustment, better battery life, and an upgraded MagSafe charging case with a built-in speaker and lanyard loop.

Given that the AirPods Pro 2 don't have an operating system, Apple rolls out firmware updates instead. This means that users don't have to worry about manually updating their AirPods. Instead, the firmware will be updated when the AirPods Pro 2 are charging and within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. If new firmware has been released for the AirPods Pro 2, the best way to manually force an update is to put them in the case, connect them to a charger, and make sure they are connected to an Apple device. The latest version of the AirPods Pro 2's firmware can be found on Apple's official support page.

To check what firmware version the AirPods Pro 2 are running on an iPhone or iPad, users will first need to make sure that their devices are updated to the latest available version of iOS or iPadOS, respectively. Next, open the Settings app, tap 'Bluetooth,' and tap the info button (i) next to AirPods Pro. The version number will be listed under the 'About' section. To check the firmware version on a Mac, press and hold the Option key while clicking on the Apple logo in the menu bar and selecting 'System Information.' In the window that opens, click on 'Bluetooth' and look for the firmware version under AirPods Pro.

Apple has already released a few firmware updates for the AirPods Pro 2. Unfortunately, the company doesn't specify the contents of the update, unlike more detailed iOS and macOS release notes. Instead, most AirPods firmware updates are described as bringing improvements and bug fixes. Since the updates are automatically installed, users don't have a choice when it comes to downloading them. This can have unwanted consequences, such as a recent update for the AirPods Max that caused issues with Active Noise Cancellation. That said, Apple is pretty good at rolling out quick fixes, so AirPods Pro 2 users don't need to worry about any long-term issues caused by the automatic updates.
