Matt Damon and Ben Affleck reunite onscreen in the first trailer for the Nike Air Jordan movie Air. Damon and Affleck first became inextricably linked when they teamed up to write and star in the Oscar-winning drama Good Will Hunting. Most recently, the pair reunited on-screen for the Ridley Scott-directed historical film The Last Duel.

Now Damon and Affleck are together again, playing the men who revolutionized the sneaker game with the introduction of Air Jordan shoes, in the first trailer for MGM and Amazon's Air.

Damon heads up the cast as Sonny Vaccaro, a Nike shoe salesman who works to convince budding NBA superstar Michael Jordan to sign with the company. Affleck meanwhile plays eccentric Nike owner Phil Knight (the flashier of the two roles, if the trailer is any indication).

Everything We Know About Air

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to star in Nike Air Jordan Movie

Air obviously is based on a true-life story, one that will be familiar to fans who followed the saga of basketball superstar Jordan, who made waves in the 1980s when he spurned the advances of other sneaker companies to sign with Nike. The decision led to one of the great partnerships in sports history, as Nike became the top sneaker brand in the world, while Jordan ascended to dominance in the NBA.

In addition to Affleck and Damon, Air features a star-studded cast that includes Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans, Chris Tucker, Viola Davis, Matthew Maher and Tom Papa. Affleck himself is behind the camera as director, marking his first time helming a film since his 2017 flop Live By Night. Affleck of course previously won Oscar gold for Argo, so Air marks his attempt at a directorial rebound. The Air script was written by first-timer Alex Convery.

Amazon clearly has confidence that Air will appeal to audiences, as they're giving it a theatrical roll-out on April 5, 2023 ahead of a streaming release via Prime Video. Damon and Affleck obviously were once big draws, but box office returns for their last pairing in The Last Duel were quite weak, and the dour and murky film even became a punchline at the Academy Awards. It will be interesting to see if the long-time collaborators can recapture the magic as they team up to tell a uniquely American, and iconically '80s, story in Air.
