American Horror Story star Angela Bassett is interested in doing a Marie Laveau spinoff series. The actress first made an appearance in AHS when she starred as high priestess of voodoo magic Marie Laveau in American Horror Story: Coven. Bassett made subsequent appearances in Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, and reprised her role of Marie Laveau in Apocalypse. She currently stars in another Ryan Murphy series, 9-1-1 on Fox, as Sergeant Athena Grant.

When we first meet Marie Laveau, she owns a hair salon in present-day New Orleans while hiding her true identity of being a centuries-old powerful voodoo queen. She holds a grudge against the descendants of the Salem witches who hurt her people. The last time we saw Laveau in Apocalypse, she was suffering in her own personal hell. For her performance, Bassett earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie.

On Twitter, an AHS fan account posted terrific fan art of Marie Laveau with a pitch for a new series. The tweet read, "Angela Bassett reprises her AHS: Coven role in LAVEAU, a prequel series that chronicles her early years as the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans!" Bassett endorsed the pitch, saying the series looked "fun" and even asked creator Ryan Murphy what he thought about the idea. Murphy has not responded to the tweet, but Pose actress Angelica Ross also endorsed the pitch, tweeting, "You know I'm here for it." Judging from the thousands of retweets and favorites, Ross certainly isn't the only one.

While Bassett is currently preoccupied with 9-1-1, that doesn't mean a Laveau spinoff series is impossible. Especially after FX renewed American Horror Story through season 13 and gave the green light for an AHS spinoff, American Horror Stories. American Horror Stories, another anthology series, will follow a new story every episode rather than a new story every season. Some news about AHS season 10 has been released, including the return of many AHS heavyweights like Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, and Kathy Bates. Bassett hasn't been connected to any new AHS projects, but since it has been alleged that American Horror Stories will feature stand-alone episodes of past AHS characters, a Laveau return may come sooner than expected.

Whether it's through the new American Horror Story show or a new spinoff series, the return of fan-favorite Marie Laveau would undoubtedly be welcomed by fans. Laveau was always a captivating character who had wicked ways, but only because years of the violent oppression of her people pushed her to it. And it's no secret that Angela Bassett is a strong enough actress to carry her own series. Her leading role on 9-1-1 proves she can anchor a series and she has received plenty of critical acclaim for her various television and film work, most recently receiving two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Narrator for The Imagineering Story and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for A Black Lady Sketch Show. Perhaps Bassett's next nomination will be for playing Marie Laveau in a spinoff series.
