Will Netflix’s adorable rage-filled anime Aggretsuko return for season 3? Based on the mascot created by Sanrio (the company behind Hello Kitty), Aggretsuko started out life as a series of animated shorts before making the jump to Netflix last April. The series follows the 25-year-old Retsuko, a red panda working in a Tokyo based trading firm's accounting department. Crushed by her own anxieties as well as the endless frustration of terrifying bosses, a pushy mother, and a lack of social life, Retsuko finds cathartic release through the power of death metal karaoke sessions. When life gets to be too much, she picks up her microphone and launches into profanity-laden scream-alongs that allow her to say all the things she could never express to people's faces.

For a show that is based on a corporate mascot, Aggretsuko is surprisingly layered and relatable, offering a spot-on examination of 20-something malaise and the particular brand of female rage that accompanies sexist microaggressions and the pressures of millennial life. For a show that's this adorable, Aggretsuko is delightfully unafraid to let out all the anger that we are typically told to bottle up. It’s also a razor-sharp satire of corporate drudgery and the falsehoods that force people to view their jobs as their reason for being. Both hilarious and bleak, Aggretsuko may be one of the true hidden gems of Netflix.

Aggretsuko season 2 saw Retsuko dealing with the pressure of her mother’s endless nagging for her to find a husband as well as a new co-worker whose passive-aggressive approach to her guidance left her more anxious than ever. A new love interest entered the scene in the form of Tadano, a laid-back slacker who reveals himself to be a tech bro billionaire, but the pair ended their romance when their clashing views on marriage and children proved too much to ignore. But what can fans expect from Aggretsuko season 3?

Aggretsuko Season 3 Release Date

Aggretsuko's second season premiered on June 14, but there hasn't been any news of a renewal yet. Typically, Netflix wait between three weeks to a month before making such a decision, unless the show is an immediate hit or prior production deals are already in place. That said, Aggrestuko fans did have to wait three whole months for the renewal announcement following season 1. Given the quick turnaround Netflix has in terms of getting new seasons out – fans seldom have to wait longer than a year or so – expect an update some time before Summer is over.

Assuming a renewal, Aggretsuko season 3 can be expected to release in Summer 2020. Previous seasons released in April and June respectively.

The joy of Aggretsuko lies in how it deals with relatable events and emotions in a manner that is both true to life and just cartoonish enough to make sense when involving anthropomorphic animals. This means the show has potentially limitless possibilities for future seasons: How will Retsuko cope with her mother’s continued matchmaking? Will she finally snap and quit her job or even be fired? Will she finally notice her hyena co-worker Haida's massive crush on her?

Aggretsuko season 2 also saw further development of side characters who mostly served as one-off jokes in season 1. Kabae, Retsuko's loud and gossipy co-worker, for example, was revealed to be a caring and thoughtful individual whose naturally maternal instincts served her well both in her family life and with the troublesome new colleague. There are plenty of characters and scenarios from the original animated shorts that the series hasn’t touched upon yet, so there is plenty of room for more in Aggretsuko season 3.
