The producers of Agents of SHIELD haven't completely ruled out a return for the series at some point in the future. The seventh and final season of Agents of SHIELD has officially begun, and already it feels like the end of an era. Created back in 2013 as the first television show set in the MCU, Agents of SHIELD focused on fan favorite Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his new SHIELD team as they investigated the lower-level threats that didn't require any Avengers. As the show went on, it managed to reinvent itself in new ways even as it moved away from the MCU.

Agents of SHIELD's final season comes as Marvel is taking a new approach to television. With all other Marvel TV shows canceled (Agents of SHIELD managing to outlast them all), the studio is creating several shows for Disney+ with more direct connections to the films. The first batch, starting with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, all star characters from the movies. Other projects, like She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel, will establish brand new characters but still tie into the greater MCU. The growing Marvel presence on Disney+ has led some fans to wonder if there could be more adventures ahead for the Agents of SHIELD characters.

As part of a post-season premiere interview with DeadlineAgents of SHIELD producers Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell didn't definitively say if this final season means the actual end for SHIELD. Loeb simply played coy by saying, "Is anything ever really over nowadays?" Bell gave a more concrete answer, but not one that actually cleared anything up:

BELL: Those issues are way above our pay grade, you know, and so with the new Disney+ and with all the restructuring that Disney is doing with ABC, and Marvel, those kinds of questions really are above what we have any say in.

As of right now, there are no official plans to bring the agents of SHIELD into a Disney+ show. Rumors suggested Daisy Johnson/Quake could end up joining one, but actress Chloe Bennet shot down the idea on social media. Still, it seems too early to completely write off the possibility of these characters returning at some point. When it comes to Marvel, it often feels like characters are very rarely gone for good, even if they end up dying. Marvel has broad plans for the future, and it would make sense to recruit someone like Quake for a new film or television show.

It also sounds like, for the first time in a while, Agents of SHIELD will connect to the MCU once again. Exactly how big of a connection it will be remains unclear, but the seventh season has already promised to crossover with Agent Carter through an appearance from Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj). Beyond that, Agents of SHIELD's final season will surely have more surprises in store. Fans will just have to wait and see if their favorite characters get new life in the future.
