The promo for Agents of SHIELD season 7, episode 4 teases the death of Agent Carter's Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj). Agents of SHIELD is officially three episodes into its seventh and final season, and so far there have been plenty of surprises. Fans knew going into the season that the beloved SHIELD team would be going back in time to stop the alien Chronicoms from erasing SHIELD from history and thus taking over the Earth. Their first pit stop brought them to 1931 New York, where they crossed paths with yet another Koenig (Patton Oswalt) and the father of the future head of HYDRA.
Their most recent time jump brought them to 1955, where they found themselves just outside Area 51. This also put Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the others in contact with Sousa. Agent Carter fans know Sousa best as an SSR agent who frequently joins forces with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). By the end of the series, he also became Peggy's love interest. Fans hoped Sousa's return in Agents of SHIELD would fill in some blanks about what happened to him and the others after Agent Carter ended, but the latest development in Sousa's story might not be what they expected.
The promo (via TV Promos) for next week's Agents of SHIELD, titled "Out of the Past", features a haunting voiceover from Coulson that seemingly seals Sousa's fate. "Every recruit learned about it," Coulson says. "This was the day Daniel Sousa became the first fallen agent of SHIELD." Adding to the noir-ish vibe is the fact that the entire promo is in black and white, like a classic film. You can see it for yourself in the space below.
According to the promo, Sousa was killed by HYDRA because he had discovered their presence within SHIELD and sought to expose them. This plot point got a brief mention in the last episode, when Sousa told an undercover Daisy (Chloe Bennet) that he had discovered something terrible growing within SHIELD that needed to be rooted out. In the greater MCU, HYDRA's parasitic presence in SHIELD wasn't discovered until Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it sounds like that was only because Sousa died before he could get the word out.
The mission for the team during Agents of SHIELD season 7 appears relatively simple on the surface: Stop the Chronicoms from messing with history. However, that already proved difficult in the first two episodes when the team came face to face with Freddy Malick (Darren Barnet) and realized they could save countless lives just by killing him. However, they managed to keep him alive and thus maintained the MCU's history. Now they'll be faced with the opportunity to save a genuinely good person, though that would still alter history. It's a tricky situation, and it'll be interesting to see how Agents of SHIELD handles it.
