A promo for the next episode of Agents of SHIELD season 7 confirms the return of Daisy's mom, the Inhuman leader Jiaying. For the final season of Agents of SHIELD, the creators have used time travel to wrap up the story with multiple references to earlier seasons and the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Early episodes featured Patton Oswalt's return as a Koenig, and Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) from Agent Carter joined the team more recently.
In addition to seeing familiar actors return, Agents of SHIELD season 7 has also included younger versions of characters from prior seasons. The Malick family has loomed large throughout, but there have also been references to season 2 villain Daniel Whitehall and many other characters thanks to Project Insight. The frequency of references and old cast members returning has left Agents of SHIELD fans wondering who else could appear in the final season.
Thanks to a promo for season 7, episode 8 shared by TV Promo, it has now been confirmed that Dichen Lachman will return as Daisy Johnson's Inhuman mother. The footage for the next Agents of SHIELD episode, titled "After, Before," shows Melinda May and Elena 'Yo-Yo' Rodriguez go to Afterlife, the Inhuman community on Earth, to find Jiaying. They hope that Jiaying and the Inhuman community will be able to figure out why Yo-Yo lost her powers and figure out a way for them to return.
The return of Jiaying is another surprise for season 7 of Agents of SHIELD. She has not been seen since season 2 of the show and died in the season finale. Now, Agents of SHIELD will shine a light on Jiaying's life many years before she attempted to destroy SHIELD. The promo doesn't reveal when this will take place, but it could be sometime in 1983 if this mission takes place directly after May, and Yo-Yo found Mack and Deke at the end of the last episode. It does appear that this will happen before 1989, as Jiaying doesn't have the scars she receives from Whitehall's experiments.
While the return of Lachman as Jiaying is the biggest takeaway from the promo, it also confirms that Gordon, a teleporting Inhuman featured in season 2, will also be featured. He's shown teleporting Jiaying out of the quinjet midway through the promo. This portion of the episode will hopefully not just be filled with callbacks but also solve the mystery of Yo-Yo's missing powers. Meanwhile, the promo indicates the rest of the team - including a new LMD Coulson - will deal with an issue regarding the time drive. It looks like another action-packed episode for Agents of SHIELD season 7, and maybe the return of Jiaying will allow Daisy another chance to see her mom.
