Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s uncertain future has caused loyal followers to take it upon themselves to campaign for the series' to be picked up for season 6. Unsurprisingly, ABC has finally gone ahead and canceled Marvel's Inhumans but remains mum on the fate of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The series was Marvel TV's first offering as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it has been spearheaded by Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), who made the jump from the studio's film division to the TV landscape following his character's untimely demise. The show has had its ups and downs over the years, but it continues to evolve as it's forced to adapt to whichever events are happening on the big screen. That has resulted in a passionate fan base that would love nothing more than to see the series renewed for another season.
Unlike usual online petitions, this one doesn't have a dedicated page yet, but fans over Twitter are using #RenewAgentsofSHIELD in their tweets to make their thoughts known. Meanwhile, others even changed their social network handles to something similar to the hashtag. Here are a few of tweets campaigning for the renewal of the pioneering Marvel TV series:
#AgentsofSHIELD saved my life. And it continues to be one of the reasons why I keep fighting. Watching an episode i've seen so many times before is the happiest and most genuine part of my day. This show means the world to me. Don't destroy it. @ABCNetwork #RenewAgentsofSHIELD pic.twitter.com/sTbD16GXGS— Destroyer of worlds (@Blackwidower200) May 11, 2018
So, when you watch the promo of the next episode, you hear 'the episode before the shocking SEASON FINALE'. When you read the press release, it says 'The SPECTACULAR SEASON FINALE'.— Agent Jhonas #RenewAgentsofSHIELD (@JhonasStil) May 10, 2018

If ABC decides to ax Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., then Disney's flagship network will be without a Marvel TV show, at least for this year. Back in January, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey confirmed that while they have a few projects on the docket, but none would premiere in 2018. That said, they're continuing to develop other ideas as possible offerings for fans. If that's the case, then it would be a little odd for the broadcast network not to have a Marvel TV series on their lineup considering that, not too long ago, Jeph Loeb maintained that ABC remains Marvel TV's mothership, despite several other projects airing on other platforms.
ABC has been known to pull the plug of fan-favorite shows due to declining ratings, such as Marvel's Agent Carter, which starred Hayley Atwell and aired for only two seasons. Then, there's also the passed-over Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off, Marvel's Most Wanted, which was meant to follow Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse. So, even if this campaign flies, it's not necessarily a guarantee that it could change the network's mind. That said, the fact that they're taking a bit of time deciding the fate of the show is a good sign; it means there's a chance that it could still be renewed. Otherwise, with Disney's upcoming streaming service, there is always a chance that the series can find its new home there, especially if the Mouse House realizes how many people are really passionate about the show.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 finale "The End" airs on Friday, May 18, at 9 pm ET on ABC.
