Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 is expected to premiere July 2019 on ABC, returning next summer after wrapping up season 5 this spring. For the last few seasons, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been on the bubble at ABC - meaning, the network could have gone either way in terms of cancelling or renewing it. In fact, according to reports, Disney stepped in on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s behalf to secure season 5. Now, though ABC renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for season 6, the show won't return until next summer.
Fans may believe this was to do with the show trying to avoid dealing with the fallout of Avengers: Infinity War, since the Marvel Studios release saw Thanos wipe out half of life in the universe and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 concluded just before that happened. However, ABC network president Channing Dungey explained it's so the show has a better chance of doing well in the ratings, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may have more longevity for it. Still, all fans know is that the series won't return for a long time. Now, though, at least there's a release window fans can look forward to next summer.
On Instagram, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Elizabeth Henstridge (who plays Jemma Simmons) responded to a fan comment asking when season 6 will premiere. In her response, Henstridge offered the July 2019 release window. However, it should be noted that while Henstridge undoubtedly has insight into the series since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 started production last month, the July release window has not been confirmed by ABC - and likely won't for some time. See Henstridge's comment below.
So far, little is officially known about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6. The show did promote Jeff Ward to series regular, meaning his character from the future, Deke - also the grandson of Fitz and Simmons - will be sticking around the present. Further, Clark Gregg will direct the season 6 premiere episode, following the actor/director helming an episode in season 5. Plus, reported casting breakdowns for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. hint that the team may be going up against some seriously formidable mercenaries.
In terms of the cast beyond Ward, it seems many of the S.H.I.E.L.D. staples will be sticking around in some form or another. Although a major shocker of the season 5 finale was Fitz's death, he'll return in season 6 since the episode ended with the team setting off to rescue the version of Fitz from their original timeline. Still, it's a little unclear whether Gregg's Phil Coulson will be back for season 6, and if he is, in what capacity. Though Gregg said he met with the series' showrunners following his season 5 finale sendoff, it's possible he'll only be involved as a director on the show going forward or only appear in flashback scenes. Unfortunately, for now fans will just have to wait and see.
Although Marvel and ABC are remaining tight-lipped about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6, now that the cast is back at work, we may learn more. As indicated by Henstridge, it will be little less than a year until the show returns, but in that time, fans may see the show teased by the cast and the creatives involved. However, any official announcements - beyond casting - likely won't arrive until much closer to the July 2019 premiere window.
