Marvel's Agents of SHIELD season 6 gets a fresh poster, along with photos that highlight some of the new characters. The ABC show has been off for nearly a year now, but will return just two weeks after Avengers: Endgame changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever. Thankfully, though, Agents of SHIELD has essentially given up on trying to connect with the MCU movies at this point. Instead, season 6 will pick up a year after the season 5 finale, which ended with Phil Coulson setting off to spend his final days (for real, this time) on a beach in Tahiti, with Melinda May by his side.

By the time season 6 gets underway, Mack has taken over as SHIELD's leader and his team is still hard at work trying to locate Fitz. For those who need a refresher: Simmons' other half was killed at the end of season 5, but is still alive in the present thanks to a bit of trickery involving time travel. Problem is, the other SHIELD agents don't know where he's been hibernating in outer space and could use a little help in tracking him down. Fortunately, they'll be getting just that, by the sound of it.

TVLine has posted photos of three new characters in Agents of SHIELD season 6, in the forms of Izel, Malachi, and Dr. Marcus Benson. ABC has also unveiled a one-sheet that confirms season 6's premiere date and features the main SHIELD team together, along with season 5 addition Deke and Clark Gregg as Sarge aka. "not-Coulson". You can check them out in the space below.

Izel is played by Karolina Wydra (Sneaky Pete, Quantico) and is described as being a mercenary from another galaxy who aids the SHIELD team as they try and find Fitz. Meanwhile, Malachi is portrayed by Christopher James Baker (Ozark, Shades of Blue) and is said to be a mysterious assassin who hales from a faraway planet. Lastly, Dr. Benson is played by Barry Shabaka Henley (Rush Hour, Bosch) and is described as a highly intelligent Natural Sciences professor who helps the SHIELD crew out at some point. Funnily enough, of the three, the regular human Dr. Benson might be the most intriguing. After all, it's already somewhat clear that the SHIELD agents will cross paths with Izel and Malachi while they're in space. But what, precisely, do they need a Natural Sciences expert for?

Speaking of mysteries: Gregg's new character remains an enigma for now, just two weeks before Agents of SHIELD returns to the airwaves. Sarge is said to be based on multiple Marvel comic book characters, and there are several fan theories about why he looks exactly like Coulson (he's a Life Model Decoy, he's from an alternate dimension, and so on). Whatever happens, it seems the show isn't done re-inventing itself and will continue to add new wrinkles to its mythology over the episodes that lie ahead. That ought to come as welcome news to everyone who's been enjoying the ride so far.
