Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on a mission to save the world in a new season 5 trailer - just not the one you might think. Friday's two-hour Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere saw the agents (minus Fitz) all stuck in space on a mysterious spaceship where Kree enslaved humans. However, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 delivers a major twist as they soon find out they're actually 100 years in the future thanks to an aged postcard Coulson finds from Fitz back in present day that says he's "working on it."

It turns out in the future all that remains of the Earth is a bunch of pieces of rock after Daisy supposedly quaked it into oblivion. Whether this is true or just a story heard by new character Deke (Jeff Ward) remains to be seen, but at the very least there's a lot our team still doesn't know about what happened in the past or their current situation. Everyone on the Lighthouse thinks that Coulson and the gang have come to save them, yet maybe the past can't be undone and all they can do is move on from there.

In a new promo [above] for next week's third episode, titled "A Life Spent," and the rest of the season, each member of the team is dealing with what this new predicament means to them. Daisy seems reluctant to believe that her powers could ever be strong enough to destroy the whole world. Meanwhile, ever the stalwart hero, Mack is struggling to retain some semblance of control on the situation without losing their values. This time around they're not just fighting to save lives but in a battle to save the last of the human race. Meanwhile, we're still wondering where Fitz is in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5.

The question now on a lot of people's minds is how or if this new storyline they're exploring in season 5 will tie Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. into Avengers: Infinity War at all. If the world is going to be destroyed anyway, then why bother saving it? All will be revealed in time over the course of the entire season, but for now little battles will have to be fought. The new promo also shows Daisy going on a rescue mission to save Simmons, who has been made a servant of the Lighthouse's Kree overlord, Kasius.

Once the team is all together, they'll probably be better off and able to solve this puzzle they find themselves in. Yet for now, Coulson isn't wasting any time as he plans to take them down to what's left of the Earth to search for answers. In the season premiere, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. set a lot of balls in motion, and now we get to watch and see how they all fall and if the team can ever get back to their own time.
